Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Vol. I only (of the three-volume set). Ex-library. A Fair 8vo hardcover with gray cloth boards that were originally half -bound in black leather. NO dust jacket. Marbled end papers with a reinforced front hinge and a nearly open rear hinge. Library markings appear limited to front matters and end papers as the text (618 pp.) appears clean and securely bound, albeit with age appropriate tanning. Gilt top edge. The gray cloth portion of the boards is soiled and rubbed. The board edges and corners are well rubbed. The original paneled black leather spine covering has failed and has been covered (in the case of the portion of the boards adjacent to the spine) or replaced (in the case of the spine itself) with black cloth tape. The surviving portions of the original spine; namely, black leather with gilt lettering and lines on four panels and four raised bands have been affixed atop the black tape. (At least one bottom panel and raised bands near the spine head and tail are now missing.) In short, a fascinating if flawed copy. **Extra charges may be requested to cover postage costs on an expedited and/or international order because of the size and weight of this book.

[Islamic Folklore] FIRST LANE TRANSLATION. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (25 x 16cm), pp.xxxii; 618 [2]; pp.[2] xii; 643 [5]; pp.[2] xi; 763 [5]. With frequent in-text wood engravings after Harvey, as well as a decorated title page to each volume. Recently rebacked in brown calf, with slightly raised bands, gilt titles to twin black labels, and further gilt decoration to spine. Using the original brown full calf boards with gilt ruling. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers. A bookseller's ticket to verso of flyleaf of each volume, and a black ink ownership to facing blank of volumes I and II. Lovely crisp, clean copies internally. Moderate wear to original boards, now restored to a robust, attractive condition. Very good. One of the most famous Orientalists, Lane lived in Egypt for many years, frequently disguising himself as a Turk to better assimilate himself into Egyptian society, and to improve his Arabic. His translation of the great compendium of Middle-Eastern folklore was his most successful work, weaving together a linguistic sensibility with an epic style, well suited to the dramatic tale of Scheherazade and Shahryar.

London, Charles Knight, 1841 [volume II] 1840. Three volumes in large 8vo. Contemporary blue half-calf over watered cloth boards by Sharpe & Kellet of Liverpool, spines decorated in gilt and with red moroccco-lettering pieces, marbled endpapers; pp. xxxii, 618; xii, 643; xii, 763, wood-engraved titles in pagination, copiously illustrated throughout with superb wood-engravings; light wear to extremities, preliminaries occasionally lightly spotted, a solid and attractive set. First edition of volumes two and three, early reprint of the first volume. The first English version of the vast corpus of Arabian fairy and folk tales to be translated directly from the Arabic, immensely influencial on British imagination of life, myth and culture of the Arabic World. Lane had lived for years in Egypt, was a superior Arabist and deeply immersed in Arabic culture. Being a trained illustrator himself, Lane supervised the work of William Harvey (1796-1866) a favoured pupil of Bewick, the inventor of wood-engraving. Lane believed that the corpus 'presented "most admirable pictures of the manners and customs of the Arabs, and particularly of those of the Egyptians" (Lane, Modern Egyptians, 1.vi n.). It reigned as the leading English translation of the Nights for decades, and its copious notes are stimulating micro-essays of enduring value' (ODNB).
