Erstausgabe
Two works in one vol. 8vo. [2], viii, ii, 172; iv, 164 pp. With 22 copper-engraved folding plates (4 in first, 18 in second). Contemporary reverse calf binding, raised bands, red & gilt morocco spine label (scuffing to spine, minor edgewear), still an excellent clean copy. First edition of these two influential works by the well-known Newton proponent, with the first including sections on properties of the earth and sea, a table of latitude and longitude for significant places, the use of globes in solving geographical questions, as well as principles of navigation and sailing according to the Earth as a sphere. He is perhaps best remembered for the second work on geometrical dialling and sundials, including sections on the fundamental principles, practice of creating sundials, and the construction of assorted accurate sundials. Emerson (1701-1782) was an amateur English mathematician and teacher, horologist, and harpsichord tuner, in Hurworth, County Durham. He wrote a popular defense of Newton's Principia, a treatise on fluxions (calculus), as well as constructed clocks and sundials -- one of which still exists.
