"Après une mission d'inspection officielle des hôpitaux d'aliénés, il succède à Pinel comme médecin en chef à l'hôpital de la Salpêtrière en 1810, où il initie, en 1817, le premier enseignement sur les maladies mentales. De 1825 à 1834, il dirige la maison de Charenton.
