Zustand: Fair. 1878. No Edition Remarks. 176 pages. No dust jacket. This is an ex-Library book. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. Library copy, with expected inserts and inscriptions. Rough-cut pages. Light foxing and tanning to pages. More prominent to text block edges, pastedown and free endpaper. Hinges are moderately cracked, exposing netting and causing boards and binding to be loose. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Spine has light tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Published in London by John Russell Smith in the years 1854-60 in 12 volumes, this is the First Edition of Eyton's "Antiquities of Shropshire" limited to only 300 copies, illustrated with 135 wood engraved plates and 15 folding maps, 8vo bound in old half leather bindings with marbled paper covered boards, and marbled endpapers, This set originally came from the Library of Robert Alfred Constantine, with his armorial bookplate at the front of each volume. And his library number in gilt to spines, It appears that he was using the books for research, looking into his families historical connections with the Shropshire village of Eaton Constantine, as he has underlined passages in the books connected with the village and the Constantine family name (these are in pencil, which could be erased if desired, see pictures) The bindings have some mild rubbing wear to the leather, with a few scuffs and scrapes, nothing overly noticeable, marbled paper to outer board edges worn, else bindings are in good solid condition, leather joints all in good order with no cracking, internally foxing to title pages, and noticeable foxing to top edges of a few pages and plates. Most of the maps and a few of the plates have been mounted on linen. Apart from the occasional noticeable foxing the contents are generally clean. A very presentable set in the original 12 volumes Books are heavy, nearly 11 kilos, Overseas shipping costs will be significantly higher than the basic standard quote.

Published in London by John Russell Smith in the years 1854-60 in 12 parts, here bound in six, this is the First Edition of Eyton's "Antiquities of Shropshire" limited to only 300 copies, illustrated with 135 wood engraved plates and 15 folding maps, 8vo bound in old half leather bindings with marbled paper covered boards, and marbled endpapers, with later replacement leather spines, top edges gilded, This set originally came from the Library of The Duke of Bedford, with his presentation bookplate presented to The Institution of Surveyors, at the front of each volume. The bindings have some wear to the leather corners which have been professionally restored, internally some foxing to endpapers, occasional marks to a few pages, else generally contents nice and clean. Books are heavy, nearly 11 kilos, overseas shipping costs will be significantly higher than the basic standard quote.

Fine binding in half black calf, raised bands, gilt tooled spines, contrasting orange and maroon spine labels, marbled boards and endpapers, red edges. Binding is unsigned but it is first class. Very light tide mark affecting the inner corners of a few plates in the first vol, else text and plates are very clean. Bindings are tight. This is an extremely attractive set.
