Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. BERING S VOYAGES TWO VOLUMES AMERICAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY 1935 BY F.A. GOLDER. These two small hard cover books (5 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 371 & 291 pages respectively) were published by the American Geographical Society of New York; they are reprints dated 1935 of the 1922 First Editions. I was very surprised that there were not more readily available in the book trade online; only one copy of one of the volumes was found. Happily, this two-volume set is almost pristine. They are bound in fine beige cloth with black and gilt title panels on cover and spine in each volume. The sub-title tells us that they are: An account of the efforts of the Russians to determine the relation of Asia and America. The books include the Logbooks and Official Reports of the Russian Expeditions and are well illustrated including many charts and maps, some of them fold-outs. Condition: These two books are in near fine condition. The hard covers are clean and bright with just a few specks on the rear covers; they are barely bumped. Inside, the books are unmarked (except for some easily erased pencil notations about bookseller s prices) and the pages and illustrations are bright and clean, without toning or foxing. All the hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders. Language: ENG.

Large octavo in blue paper covered boards over navy blue cloth spine with paper spine label. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Title page printed in red and black. Frontispiece portrait engraving of Jonens about 1780 and with full page plates. 230 pp. with bibliography and index. Fine in the plain dust wrapper printed on the spine only; shallow wear at head and foot spine egdes, toning to the spine with a few light splashes, some toning to the edges of the panels. American Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones (1747-1792), after being unable to collect prize money earned as a result of American naval actions during the war and denied the command of the USS America in 1792, in 1787 entered the service of Russian Empress Catherine II. He took part in actions in the Black Sea repulsing the Ottomans in what have been called Catherine's First and Second Turkish Wars. By 1788, Jones, disliking and inept at engaging Russian politics though he was awarded the Order Of Saint Anna, was disliked by native Russian navy hierarchy and also earned the emnity of the Empress. He was unable to earn a command in either the Swedish or Danish navies (the Empress apparently saw to that) and in 1790 relocated to Paris. Jones' particpation in the Turkish Wars is relate in this work though most of the volume contains trascriptions of letters from 1785 to 1792 in both the original French and in English translations.
