Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Publisher's mottled red cloth, ornately blind-stamped boards, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament on spine; complete set of 3 volumes, 8vo; pp. xiv, [2], 453, [3] (blank, ads), plus 10 maps; xi, [1], 445, [3] (blank, ads), plus 10 maps; xiii, [3], 549, plus 7 maps. The history of America's civil war, through a British lens. Spine tips and corners bumped and lightly chipped; bindings a bit shaken; some foxing, but overall clean and unmarked, with unopened pages. A nice working set, with an interesting provenance -- armorial bookplate of John W. G. Spicer of Spye Park on front paste-down of each volume. Spye Park Estate was bought by Major John W.G. Spicer (1817-1883), an army officer whose investment in a Brewery had made his fortune. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) had previously offered more for the estates but John Bayntun Starky had refused it and the Royal Family bought Sandringham instead.
