Dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. Foreword by Governor John Engler. 9.25"x6.25", 205 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Empire Builders is the remarkable story of how Michigan's early entrepreneurs led the United States to world prominence in cars, chemicals, and cornflakes. Henry Ford, Billy Durant, Herbert Dow, and Will Kellogg all became famous around the globe. Empire Builders tells how, in each case, they failed before they succeeded - and sometimes even after they succeeded. What they shared was a stubborn persistence to invent and market something that would make life easier and simpler for millions of people. In other words, these Michigan entrepreneurs delayed the gratification of their own wants in order to satisfy the wants of others. They had faith that in free and open competition they could make products that would meet the needs of almost everyone. In doing so, they helped shift the balance of economic power in the world from Europe to the United States. In ancient days, heroes and their victories were celebrated and remembered in epic poems, psalms, and speeches. At a time when Americans seem confused about their past, Empire Builders provides readers with triumphant heroes, dramatic stories, and a useful heritage to study and learn. Empire Builders was published in cooperation with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, a nonprofit research and educational institute that is devoted to improving the quality of life for all Michigan citizens by promoting sound solutions to state and local policy questions. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). This is a rare instance of my owning two copies of the same book. I'm placing this second one up for sale because it is signed by the author. In fact, once listed, it will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet. It was also his first book which figures into the signed inscription on the blank verso of the first front end paper. It reads:' To Richard Krantz, John Hopkins University gave you a college education and me my first book. Two cheers for Baltimore. Burton W. Folsom, Jr.' This book may have been published in 1981 but it certainly doesn't look like it. It looks like it was published in 1910. Just kidding. It looks pretty much new. That is, there's no soiling at all on the covers. The brown lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges are in excellent shape. So are the corners. There is a little bit of crinkling at the spine ends. The page edges are very clean. The book is solidly bound from cover to cover. The interior of the book is in top-notch condition. The pages appear to be perfectly clean. I scrolled through them several times without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book which goes back a number of years. That has kept it in tip top shape. It's very clean. There is little to no wear. That goes for the flaps as well, no soiling, no conspicuous wear. The jacket is not priced or clipped. Really nice looking, take a look at the photos. From the dust jacket: 'Modern scholars tend to credit broad institutional and environmental forces with shaping the world as we know it. The influence of individuals on the direction of historical development is generally ignored or discounted outright. Urban Capitalists offers a persuasive argument for the ability of exceptional individuals to have a profound and lasting impact on the course of history. Burton W. Folsom, Jr., combines economic, social, and regional history in a comprehensive examination of the urban growth in two American industrial regions: the Lehigh and Lackawanna valleys in Pennsylvania. The author cites the energy and ability of individual entrepreneurs in overcoming problems of poor location, insufficient natural resources, and competition from neighboring towns to build manufacturing centers of international importance. The rise of the city of Scranton provides Folsom's basic outline and model. Located in the coal-rich, but iron-poor, Lackawanna Valley, without direct access to commercial and industrial markets, it seemed an unlikely place to build a major steel industry. The author demonstrates that these disadvantages were overcome only through the imaginative and farsighted planning of the Scranton family and their associates. Once established, however, Scranton's population and importance grew steadily-- often, as the book points out, at the expense of other cities in the region. According to Folsom, both Scranton and Bethlehem grew because aggressive entrepreneurs were able to outfight competitors from nearby towns and devise workable methods to compensate for the scarcity of important natural resources in their areas. These urban capitalists made Scranton and Bethlehem commercial centers of their regions and showcases for industrial development and imaginative city growth. Urban Capitalists is an authoritative examination of city building in industrial America and of the vital contributions of individuals in shaping the nation's growth.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

As new condition red boards with a black spine and silver spine lettering contained in an as new condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page List of Other Books by Mallory Factor and Elizabeth Factor; Dedication; Foreword by Edwin J. Feulner, Jr. Heritage Foundation Founder; Preface by General John Rosa, President of The Citadel; Introduction by Mallory Factor; Afterword by Haley Barbour, Former Governor of Mississippi; Acknowledgments; Notes; Index and About the Authors. Signed and Inscribed by Mallory Factor with black Sharpie on the Dedication Page. "Bestselling author, professor, and pundit Mallory Factor illuminates the conservative tradition in American politics with essays from leading figures in the conservative movement. Ambitious in its breadth and depth, Big Tent provides a fresh and surprising treatment of the conservative movement as told by the leaders themselves. In this unique collection, which is based on his star-studded course at The Citadel, conservative leaders explain how the movement developed as a powerful force in American politics, how it functions now with a wide range of viewpoints, and where it is going in the future. The origin of conservative ideas - from their ancient roots to their English origins, from the American Revolution to William F. Buckley, Alexis de Tocqueville to Barry Goldwater, and libertarianism to neo-conservatism - are revealed and examined in this compelling volume. These illuminating essays include: Newt Gingrich on the political ideas surrounding the American Revolution; Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute on the emergence of libertarianism; Ed Meese on the Reagan Revolution; David Keene of the NRA on Buckley-style "fusionism"; Phyllis Schlafly on the rise of the religious right; Donald Rumsfeld on the Bush administration's "War on Terror"; Rand Paul on the future of the conservative movement. Insightful and stimulating, Big Tent is an outstanding survey of the conservative movement from its most significant living figures." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
