Hard cover. Cloth and paper over boards. 464 p. Audience: General/trade. The religious ideology known as 'Jihad' or 'Holy War' is based on a strict interpretation of the Koran, aimed at establishing a global Islamic state. Kepel, fluent in Arabic and Professor of Middle East Studies at the Institute for Political Studies in Paris, traveled throughout the Muslim world, gathering materials, interviews and archival materials toward understanding this Islamist political movement that began in the early 1970s, grew, and began to split in the 1990s as violent terrorism discouraged moderates who developed a 'Muslim democracy' concept (from jacket info). Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Good-. This lot of 46 mimeographed bulletins was deaccessioned from the Harvard College Library (originally received from the Survey); also included are photocopies of the missing 13 mimeographed bulletins (specified above), in order to make this lot a complete run of bulletins 1-59 (September 24, 1919 - December 12, 1922). Laid in at top of the bulletins is a mimeographed 1 April 1922 letter from Pennsylvania state geologist George H. Ashley, addressed "Dear Sir" (presumably sent to university librarians, with this one being sent to a Harvard librarian), listing the bulletins that he was mailing to them. Many of the mimeographed bulletins have wear, short margin tears and/or chips and some soil; the bulletins range in length from 3 p. to 26 p.; most are about 11 p. each.
