Illustrated by 4 portrait frontispieces protected by tissue guards. Decorated by initials. Contains 1086 letters and papers (and 103 in the Supplement) of the Paston family of Norfolk gentry, 1422-1509, primary source material for the periods of the Wars of the Roses and the reign of Henry VII. In their original spelling they record the transition from Late Middle English to Early Modern English. Gairdner's first edition of 1872-75 was based on expanding the John Fenn versions of 1787, 94 and 1823. This is a four volume reprint of the 1904 edition, including the Supplement of letters which subsequently came to light. The original manuscripts are held by the British Library and in Oxford and Cambridge. James Gairdner (1828-1912) was a Scottish historian and editor specialising in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. He worked at the Public Record Office, London, 1846-1900.
