The letter reads -'Dear Mr Slader, I will certainly sign your copy of 'A Modern Comedy' if you will send it to me at Grove Lodge; Hampstead; London; NW3 about March 14 when I shall be back in London. Please address it for return. I've had to make a rule only to sign for acquaintances, but one who lectures on me must be considered such. Yes, I come of old Devon yeoman stock on my father's side. It's a great county. Very truly yours, John Galsworthy' John Galsworthy 1867-1933 was an English novelist and playwright. Notable works include The Forsyte Saga (1906?1921) and its sequels, A Modern Comedy and End of the Chapter. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1932. Size is 268m x 210mm. Condition is good. Covers: pebbled green cloth, gilt titles front, 5 raised bands and bright gilt ornamentation/titles spine; very mild sunning to center of boards corresponds to DJ. DJ: pebbled green cloth DJsw/gilt linework front/back and gilt flowers and lettering to spines, lined with gold moire, inside edges have gilt flowered dentelles; as books are, the center is lighter than the edges, faded and a bit looser where sun exposed, spines mildly sunned. A very nice set indeed.
