Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Colored map, sectioned and mounted on linen, 99 x 81 cm. Scale: 1:6333,600. 10 miles to an inch. Relief shown by spot heights. At head of title: Published with Government Authority. Reduced chiefly from the Ordnance and Geological Surveys under the direction of Sir Archibald Geikie, Director General of the Geological Survey. Map folds to about 13 x 22 cm. Bound in blue cloth over boards with gilt letters and decorations on the front cover. Map in near fine to fine condition with the chief defect being some silverfish grazing marks along one edge of one section, but not affecting the content. Spine of cloth case slightly frayed along the edges and at the top and bottom, cover gilt slightly dulled, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. "Descriptive Text" announced at the top of the front cover is not present. Still this is a rare copy of this authoritative map in remarkably fine condition given its age and fragility. Florence Nightingale's family owned the estate in Lea and her family took a keen interest in the school. The Nightingale family home was built by William Edward Nightingale (1794-1874) on inherited lands in 1825. Florence had grown up at Lea Hurst and she retained a strong connection with the property school, later joining the school board. In particular, she supported Burton's introduction of geology, natural history and gardening in the school studies, hence the subject matter of some of her own books that were given to him by her and so inscribed. Binding - Fine. Textblock - VG (age-toning & light foxing, signs of use, including occasional underlining in text). Rebound in green cloth, executed in a period style, gilt stamped spine lettering Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Christmas 1897, 3rd person PRESENTATION COPY by Nightingale, in pencil as is her custom, on the half-title page.
