BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition, with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of prior owner. Not a library book nor remainder. The stapled binding is in very good condition. The heavy stock wraps are intact but turning brown along the edges. 11 x 8 ½, 40 pages, 5 ounces XX The illustrations are: Gonzales County Courthouse, Gonzales County Jail, Eggleston House, the Old Gonzales College, Episcopal Church, Randle-Rather Building, T-41 Weathervane (atop the Gonzales Fire Station), Kennard House, Charles T. Rather House, John Curtis Jones House, Pilgrim House, LeMond House, Sneed House, Lewis-Houston House, Fouts House, J.D. Wells House, John Fauth House, Bell House, Braches House and Sam Houston Oak. A Google Map search indicates that all these buildings are still standing (as of the date the Google car took photos). [From the introduction] Gonzales was established in August, 1835, as the capital of Empresario Green DeWitt?s Colony. It was the westernmost American settlement until after the close of the Texas Revolution. Major James Kerr drew the plans for the town and named it in honor of Don Rafael Gonzales, provisional governor of Coahuila and Texas.
