Buch
Offprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 3-15. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on title page, title page dog-eared, otherwise good and clean. - From the Concluding Comments: The issues Stone evokes rightly deserve his passion. There obviously is something repugnant in Athens' prosecution of its famous philosopher; and at the same time, the thought that a philosopher so committed to talking about justice should have criticized democracy harshly (as in the Republic) provokes understandable indignation. These issues stimulate because they are not merely historical in nature. Stone's passion seems goaded in part by the correct suspicion that Plato wants us to understand the trial of Socrates from the standpoint of some larger issues. The issues include the possibility that there exists an inherent tension between democracy, or simply political life, and philosophy; between power and reflection; between consent and wisdom. Stone writes from the standpoint of the political man, the citizen; he is the reporter, covering a sensational trial (p.4). In so doing he both closes off a cool appraisal of the larger issues and fulfills a frequent prophecy in the Platonic dialogues. The prophecy of book VII of the Republic is that when the philosopher reenters the cave, his or her virtue will be invisible to its residents. Or as Socrates puts it at the start of the Sophist (a dialogue whose dramatic date is 400 or 399, shortly before Socrates' trial): the philosophers appear to some to be worthless, to others valuable, and sometimes they take on the appearance of statesmen, sometimes of Sophists and sometimes they seem to be quite mad. The philosopher has an image problem. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 283-307. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Plato s Protagoras is composed of three distinct frames. The outer frame consists in Socrates brief discussion with an unnamed companion. The remainder of the Protagoras is willingly narrated by Socrates to the companion (and unnamed others), from memory of course, and apparently right after the main action. The inner frame consists in Socrates dialogue with Hippocrates. Roused before dawn by the impetuous young man, Socrates leads Hippocrates to reflect on the wisdom of his enthusiastic desire to study with Protagoras. This is a classic and successful little example of Socratic dialogue. He then takes Hippocrates to meet Protagoras; the bulk of the dialogue call it the innermost frame consists in Socrates exchanges with Protagoras. Hippocrates does not utter a word in this part of the dialogue, though it is initiated at his request and seems undertaken by Socrates for his benefit. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 361-397. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Author's name underlined, otherwise a very good and clean copy. - Nonetheless, in modern times the problem of interpreting Plato and with it, the problem as to why Plato wrote dialogues has not received the attention it deserves. Scholars working on Plato tend to proceed in their work with insufficient reflection on their own assumptions concerning the two themes outlined above [ why did Plato write dialogues , and how ought we to read Plato s dialogues ]. They therefore tend either to ignore scholars making different assumptions or, when they do read them, to dismiss them as misguided or incompetent. The time has now come for a full-fledged debate about the reading of Plato, and so also about the reasons for which Plato wrote dialogues. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to Wolfgang [Haase]. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Today everybody permits himself the expression of his wish and his dearest thought; hence I, too, shall say what it is that I wish from myself today, and what was the first thought to run across my heart this year what thought shall be for me the reason, warranty, and sweetness of my life henceforth. I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who makes things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 Offprint, stapled in softcover.

Reprint, stapled into carton. Zustand: Gut. pp. 84-106. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to Wolfgang Haase. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: Interpreters of Plato have arrived at a general consensus to the effect that there exists a problem of interpretation when we read Plato, and that the solution to the problem must in some way incorporate what has tendentiously been called the "literary" and the "philosophical" sides of Plato s writing. The problem is created by the fact that Plato wrote in dialogue form, indeed a specific type of dialogue form. The solution must somehow combine into a coherent theory of the "meaning" of the dialogues, the ways in which these texts work (such as the use of imagery, metaphor, myth, allusion, irony, as well as argument). At the same time, there exists enormous disagreement about how one ought to move from these general observations to interpretation of a particular text. The problem of interpretation lies not merely in the fact that Plato wrote dialogues. That alone would not necessarily present any hermeneutical issues of unusual difficulty. Plato s distinctive use of the dialogue form creates the difficulties. The genre that we might call "the Platonic dialogue" is distinguished by several relevant characteristics. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W.Haase. - Author's name underlined on cover, otherwise good and very clean. - Abstract: Despite the near universal desire for happiness, relatively little philosophy has been done to determine what "happiness" means. In this paper I examine happiness (in the long-term sense), and argue that it is best understood in terms of tranquillity. This is not merely "contentment. " Rather, happiness requires reflection the kind of reflection characteristic of philosophy. Happiness is the product of correctly assessing its conditions, and like any assessment, one can be mistaken, and thus mistaken about whether one is happy. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
