The stars and galaxies that we observe are customarily assumed to consist of ordinary matter. In this book a leading physicist suggests that there are some good reasons for believing that half of them are made of antimatter. Worlds-Antiworlds is the first presentation for a general audience of a new theory of the universe based on recent results in elementary particle physics, namely, that atom-smashing experiments show symmetry in the production of particles and antiparticles. It seems logically unsatisfactory, say proponents of the new cosmology, that cos-mological theories should be based on the assumption that the uni-verse contains only matter and no antimatter. The cosmology de-scribed in this book is the first to be based on complete symmetry between matter and antimatter. The book is written for readers without any special training in phys-ics or astronomy, although the facts and ideas presented will be of interest even to specialists. The necessary background is provided in brief sketches of the historical development of cosmology, of its pres-ent state, and of the recent developments in particle physics and plasma physics that have important bearings on cosmology. Pro-fessor Alfven explains the new theory fully, compares it to other models, and explores its implications for our understanding of such astronomical spectacles as supernovae, radio stars, and quasars.
