Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. Demy octavo, [20cm/8inches], full gilt-embossed beige cloth w/ mylar-protected dust jacket, pp. 262, indexed. Illustrated with b-w halftones and colour plates, &ct. Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional photographs. . The December 2009 Times review noted: "When I moved to Boston some years ago, I made an early trip to the Museum of Fine Arts and found myself face to face with John Singer Sargent s nearly life-size portrait of four pinafore-clad girls, "The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit." Unlike many other visitors, I didn t take a seat on the bench in front of this haunting picture and study the canvas intently or, as some have, begin to weep. I didn t even stay very long and, in the many times I ve visited the painting since, I ve never stopped to gaze at length, afraid I might not be able to quit looking. There has always been something mysterious and disturbing about these four girls, conventionally dressed and well-mannered though they seem: the antithesis of Louisa May Alcott s Little Women, who entered the public consciousness so boisterously in the late 1860s, just over a decade before Sargent painted the enigmatic Boit sisters. The Boit family was from New England, but Sargent painted the girls in the foyer of a grand Paris apartment, deliberately situating them in a locus of uncertainty perpetually on a threshold, like their roving expatriate parents, who had leased the suite of rooms three years earlier. Modern viewers may not understand, as people in their day would have, that those crisp white pinafores were intended to protect the girls everyday finery. Who but the very rich, a very long time ago, would have dressed children in white for play? It is, however, easy for anyone to read wealth in the parquet floors, the pale blue figured carpet on which the youngest girl sits and the two enormous blue-and-white Japanese vases against one of which .". -Megan Marshall, Dec. 10, 2009.

Google notes: "American Artists have been inspired by Italy since the 1760s, when Benjamin West, the first American painter to travel there, was drawn to the ancient Roman ruins and magnificent Renaissance architecture, statuary, and frescoes. This intriguing, superbly illustrated book is the first to explore the fascination Italy held for the American artist from West's time to the eve of World War I. The unique sense of the past found in Italy, where tangible evidence exists of a continual civilization from antiquity to the present, lured countless American artists to its cities, towns, and countryside. Painters from West and Copley in the eighteenth century to Cole, Inness, Whistler, Sargent, and Prendergast in the nineteenth century were inspired to create many of their finest works in Italy, as were American sculptors such as Hiram Powers and Harriet Hosmer and writers from Washington Irving to Henry James. This in-depth study includes 319 illustrations, of which 113 are reproduced in full color, many of works that have not previously been published. Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., John Moors Cabot Curator of American Paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Professor of Art History at Boston University, provides a broad overview of the American perception of Italy and the unique role that Italy played in the formation of American art.Further insights into this new area in the study and appreciation of American art are offered in four essays by such leading art historians as William H. Gerdts, City University of New York; Erica E. Hirshler, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Fred S. Licht, Peggy Guggenheim Museum, Venice, and Boston University; and William L. Vance, Boston University. Individual commentaries on each of the paintings, sculpture, and watercolors have been written by the curatorial staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Lure of Italy accompanies a major exhibition of the same name, organized by Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr., and Erica E. Hirshler that opens at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and travels to the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

"Praised for his jewel-like landscapes, park scenes, and sympathetic images of women, William Merritt Chase was a leading American Impressionist painter and an influential teacher in the late nineteenth century. This beautifully illustrated volume provides a compact introduction to Chase's paintings and pastels and samples several of his favorite motifs, including the theatrical environment of his antique-filled studio, the modern women he celebrated, the costumes and decorative arts of Japan, children at play in city and countryside, and thoughtful moments of leisure and contemplation. A native of the state of Indiana, Chase left his modest boyhood home to study at the Munich Academy, where he both fell in love with the old masters and became determined to celebrate the people and places of his own time. His studio became a stage set for his imagination, where objects from around the world came together in harmonious arrangements of color and form, and where subjects and patrons alike were dazzled by both his paintings and his artistic persona." - Publisher. Buch
Trade Paperback. Zustand: Used - Good. American Paintings features over 100 masterworks dating from 1670 to 1960 from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The artists featured range from Copley, Whistler, Cassatt, and Sargent to Hopper, Marin, Gorky, and Pollock. Divided according to chronology and genre, each of the books fifteen sections begins with a thematic introduction, followed by short discussions of individual paintings. Certain introductions narrate a history of American painting--from the earliest years of the British colonies to the mid-20th century, touching on such focal points as the American Revolution, westward expansion, the Civil War, and the two World Wars--while others more specifically discuss genres such as history painting, folk painting, portraiture, and still life. The narrative touches on broader themes as well, such as the American artists relationship with European art, the establishment of indigenous painting styles, the role of patronage in American art, and the question of provincial vs. high art. Rich in both visual and textual content, American Paintings is a valuable and enjoyable resource for both the museum visitor and the general reader. Book has minor shelf wear.
