Paperback. Zustand: Very Good Minus. First Edition. Produced in convenient "back pocket" size (7. in. x 5 in), this 117 pp. paperback (in cardstock covers) shows a bit of shelfwear to spine especially, and a 1 in. rubbed spot to bottom right hand corne of front panel. A series of cartoons and accompanying commentary by two astute returned servicemen, specifically themed to address the experience of American soldiers returning home after being in Japan. This first appearance published by Pacific Stars and Stripes before undergoing subsequent printings by Charles E. Tuttle. Laid in are the original blank order form and return envelope with APO address of Pacific Stars and Stripes. Perhaps Hume's scarcest title. Bill Hume was perhaps better known for his creation of the cartoon"Babysan" which depicted American servicemen in Japan. This comic was very popular with service members in Japan and was published in Stars and Stripes, Yank Magazine, and other military publications. "The Servicemen in Japan have a word for it. They call it. 'Asiatic'. It means that. they've been in Nippon too long. It means. that they'll. never be the same. Their American customs have thrown in the social towel, and Japanese customs have been tagged the winner. After a jaunt to Japan the GI speaks Sayonara (so long, buster, this. is it, the end. of the road, goodbye) to the simple self that. left the. shores. of America. He. know walks and talks, dines and dresses, acts and lives like the Japanese. He. has become definitely and deliriously Asiatic.".

Zustand: Very good. First edition of this comical post-war chronicle of culture shock, a witty survey of the everyday differences that US servicemen will experience at home after living in occupied Japan. A window into the daily life of a US serviceman meant in part as a light-hearted momento, and in part as an introduction to Japanese culture for their loved ones back home. The brainchild of two Navy servicemen, WHEN WE GET BACK HOME uses the conceit of soldiers acting "strangely" when they return home, while in fact they have simply come to appreciate differing aspects of Japanese culture. The servicemen delight in kotatsu instead of furnaces, futons instead of beds on frames, and chopsticks instead of silverware. They insist on taking shoes off in the house, wash themselves before getting in the bath, and have developed a preference for green tea over coffee. While the images depict amusing tableaux that stand alone, each is faced with a few paragraphs describing the cultural context that gives rise to the scene. The text also includes many Japanese words common to the serviceman's vocabulary ("daijobu"; "dozo"; "suteki"). An ebullient document of cross-cultural influence in the postwar period. 7'' x 5''. Original color pictorial wrappers, priced $1.00 on rear wrapper. Illustrated with full-page black and white images facing each page of text. [4]. 117, [3] pages. Faint stamp to front wrapper. Rubbing and some residue from former sticker removal to top edge of front wrapper. A bit of soil and edgewear. Interior clean.
