Paris, Mequignon-Marvis, 1821, 8°, XVI, 396 pp.; 522 pp., mit 3 gefalt. Tafeln; Halbledereinbände im Schuber; frisches Exemplar. First Edition of the first modern text-books on diseaes of the ear! "This work did much to establish otology on a sound basis, lean Marie Gaspard Itard (1774-1838) described startle tests for hearing of children and malingerers, and he developed an acumeter." Garrison & Morton "Had it not been for the French Revolution, Itard would have undoubtedly become a successful businessman as intended by his father. However, in order to avoid military service, his uncle secured him a post as health officer in a military hospital at Soliés. He became interested in medicine, studied and worked under Larrey and ultimately became a physician. It was while physician at the Institute for Deaf-Mutes in Paris that a feral child found in the woods near Aveyron came under his care. His teaching objectives and experiences with the boy have been chronicled in François Truffaut's film "The Wild Child" as well as in several books. The current contribution was based on twenty years of research and includes Itard's review of earlier works on the ear and a new classification of hearing loss based on speech discrimination ability. Among the many therapeutic procedures discussed are those dealing with Itard's catheter for the eustachian tube. He also outlines specific criteria for employing puncture of the ear drum and describes 182 case histories." Hirsch-H. Garrison & Morton No.3364; Heirs of Hippocrates 1292; Norman 1147; Waller 5080.

Paris, Mequignon-Marvis, 1821, 8°, XVI, 396 pp.; 522 pp., mit 3 gefalt. Tafeln; Halbledereinbände der Zeit; St.a.Tit.; Rücken erneuert, frisches Exemplar aus dem Vorbesitz von Hermann Schwartze. First Edition of the first modern text-books on diseaes of the ear! "This work did much to establish otology on a sound basis, lean Marie Gaspard Itard (1774-1838) described startle tests for hearing of children and malingerers, and he developed an acumeter." Garrison & Morton "This two-volume Treatise on the diseases of hearing of Jean Marie Gaspard Itard on the maladies of the ear and hearing brought a new phase in otology. Volume one deals with the anatomy, physiology of the ear, and volume two with the diseases of the ear. Itard took great care while examining his patients, and meticulously presented in volume two, their histories together with an analysis of the appearance of the pathology he saw involving the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane. . Assuming that if his patients' hearing could be improved that speech would follow, Itard attempted to increase hearing acuity of the patients at the Institute by exercising it with sounds from different sources, such as bells presented at different intensities and distances over various periods of time. After realizing the futility of this method , he advocated the use of the visual and tactile aids, such as lip-reading and touching the larynx of the speaker. He objected to the use of sing language, which he belived jeopardized (if not precluded) the acquisition of speech and delayed (if not prevented) the acquisition of reading skills." Dennis G. Pappas, Sr. An Annotated Bibliography . Half-titles. Foxing on the plates. Contemporary blue quarter roan and marbled sides (tops of joints rubbed). Some ink marks by an early owner, mostly short lines in the margin; bookplate of Richard J. Bennett. FIRST EDITION of the first modern textbook on the diseases of the ear, an important work based on 172 case histories, which did much to establish otology on a sound basis. ?What endows this book with special value is a rare honesty that deals openly with the shortcomings of the applied therapeutic methods. It was due primarily to Itard that the traditional methods were finally abandoned? (Politzer, p. 278, from a long account of this book). The text is preceded by a history of the anatomy of the ear, and in volume 2 is a long section on deafness and deaf-mutism, with which Itard was deeply involved. He devised tests for hearing, devised the psycho-acoustical phenomenon of ?sound masking?, and developed an acumeter. G&M 3364. Politzer, History of otology, pp. 278?282. Stevenson & Guthrie p. 59. Robert J. Ruben, Hear! Hear! Six centuries of otology (2002), 55.

  • Small 8vo, pp. 148, (4) adverts, stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait. Good modern half calf antique, uncut. Short tear in fore edge margin of last text leaf just touching two letters neatly repaired, but a nice copy. Old ink stamp in margin of pp. 6?7, blind library stamp on frontispiece, lower corner of title and two leaves at end, brief cataloguing note dated 1909 on blank recto of frontispiece with slight show-through, very faint withdrawn stamp on verso of title. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. A pupil of Pinel, Itard attempted to educate a young ?wild? boy, who had lived since infancy entirely apart from human contact, and who had been found living in the woods near Aveyron. Itard?s methods were based on Condillac?s analytical approach to the acquisition of knowledge, which had been used with success in teaching deaf-mutes. However in adapting this approach, Itard created an entirely new system of pedagogy which has profoundly influenced modern educational methods. Itard?s methods were adopted by his student Édouard Séguin, who applied them successfully to educating the mentally retarded, and by Maria Montessori, who applied them to childhood education in general. The optimism which Itard displayed in this first report of this extraordinary event was not borne out, and in his second report of 1807 he was forced to conclude that the boy was incapable of learning speech, an irreversible result of prolonged isolation during a crucial period of his early childhood. See G&M 4969.1 and Norman Catalogue 1144 (the first edition, in French, of 1801). This English translation, by Nogent, is extremely scarce. Much has been written on this event, but a particularly good account is Harlan Lane's The Wild Boy of Aveyron, 1977.

Work no. 1 is Garrison-Morton 4969.1: "A pupil of Pinel, Itard pioneered in the attempt to educate a young 'wild boy' who had lived since infancy entirely apart from human contact. In adapting the methods of teaching deaf-mutes to his extraordinary pupil, Itard created a new system of pedagogy which profoundly influenced modern educational methods. He was very optimistic in the above work issued nine months after he had started working with the boy. By his second account, Rapport . . . sur les nouveaux développemens et de l'état actuel du sauvage de l Aveyron, Paris, 1807 [work no. 2 in the volume offered here], Itard regretfully concluded that the boy was incapable of learning speech and that some of the effects of prolonged isolation are irreversible, especially when the isolation occurs during the crucial period of early childhood." O. . . sur l'éducation de son fils. Paris: Imprimerie Porthmann, 20 juin 1839. 15 pp. Works nos. 3 and 4 are Edouard Séguin's first two publications. Edouard Séguin, who was the student of Itard, was the first to achieve success in the education of "idiots", what would now be called special education for the mentally retarded. His school in Paris and his methods in his writings became models for others on the Continent, in England, and in the United States. After the Revolution of 1848, Séguin emigrated to the United States, where he continued his work. Maria Montessori began her own work with the education of the mentally retarded. She read both Itard and Séguin with the greatest care, copying out their writings by hand and translating them into Italian "in order that I might have time to weigh the sense of each word, and to read, in truth, the spirit of the author. . . . The voice of Séguin seemed to be like the voice of the forerunner crying in the wilderness, and my thoughts were filled with the immensity and importance of a work which should be able to reform the school and education" (The Montessori Method, pp.41-42).
