Shepherd's volume on garden design is signed by his co-author, Geoffrey Jellicoe. With over two hundred photographs. Signed by the author to the recto of the front endpaper, 'Deborah Horn, from Geoffrey', dated 1934. Jellicoe was the founding member of the Landscape Institute, and was its president for ten years in the 1940s. Whilst the volume opens with a more philosophical exploration of the relationship between gardens and people, the second part touches on the gardening traditions of Italy, France, and England, before the final section on the English School of Landscape gardening. Bound in hessian over hard boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbed to the boards with some moderate wear to the extremities. With two small tears in the hessian at the front and rear joints near the head of the spine, and a small tear to the front joint at the tail. The front hinge is starting, but firm. The rear hinge is starting and is a little tender. Internally, generally firmly bound with some points of tenderness. Pages are bright and clean. Good. book.
