Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Limited Edition. A gorgeous and very rare edition, sumptuously bound in leather and cloth, printed on special paper with sewn signatures, numbered and signed. This is number 82 of only 200 copies offered for sale in 1951, and with a grand looking broody photograph of the author as the frontispiece. This great messy novel was cut by about a third at the editors behest, so although this cannot ever be regarded as the true author text it is nonetheless an important Powys collectable. The binding and care that has been taken ensures this will last for centuries. This copy has been used a bit, the marbled endpapers are very slightly grubby, and there are some minor wrinkles to a few text pages. But this curiosity survives all complaint for the true Powysian; it is somehow reflective of the author that it ever achieved publication in this form at all. It is a true first edition, and with the brilliantly emphatic signature sprawling across the limitation page, in bluest Quink ink, this bleeding chunk of a masterpiece has a very special allure.
