First edition, 12mo, pp. [5], 14-205, [1]; text foxed and spotted, original boards becoming loose, spine largely perished. "First edition and very rare. Henry Wagner's Bullion to Books states that Johnston was the printer of the first newspaper in Chile, La Aurora. Wagner tells the story of how the bibliographer Medina tried to buy the book at a Chilean auction but it went to Carlos Edwards, the owner of the Chilean newspaper, the Mercurio. Wagner noted that 'Medina borrowed the book from him, translated it into Spanish and had it printed inside of two months.' Johnston arrived at Chili in 1811, having sailed around the Horn. The book consists of Johnston's series of letters from 9 February 1812 in Santiago de Chili to 24 April 1814 in Valparaiso. During this time, Johnston participated in the revolution against Spain, was captured by the Royalists and was taken to Peru" (Christies). American Imprints 51597; Sabin 36385; Streeter VII: 4136.
