(2) 9 pp + 5 Sheets, topographical & geologic descriptions of the Mount Mitchell Quadrangle, including sketches, figures, a columnar sections sheet, topography sheet, an aeral geology sheet, an economic geology sheet, and a structure sections sheet. First Edition: Engraved and printed by the U.S. Geological Survey, 1905. "The features on the topographic map are of three kinds -- (1) inequalities of surface, called relief, as plains, plateaus, valleys, hills, and mountains; (2) distribution of water, called drainage, as streams, lakes, and swamps; (3) the works of man, called culture, as roads, railroads, boundaries, villages, and cities." Small chips to bottom fore-edge corner wrappers with a few small closed tears, and light soiling to same. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Heavy card stock with black backstrip. Size: Elephant Folio. Book.

Stiff paper wraps, dirty with crease to front wrapper lower right corner and also to rear cover (not affecting text). Library bookplate rear cover obscuring list of published folios up until this date. 11 pages of descriptive text on "Description of the Roan Mountain Quadrangle" plus explanatory text inside front and rear wrappers. 4 colored plates plus 1 black and white chart and 2 pages of photographic illustrations. 55 x 47 cm. Plates are bright and clean, noting 2 plates have some spotting (offsetting from last text page which is higher acid). A good working copy with some edge tears. Stiff Wrappers.
