Buch
Zustand: Sehr gut. VII, 224 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly rubbed jacket, overall very good and clean. / Leicht beriebener Umschlag, insgesamt sehr gut und sauber. - Robert Kraynak offers a radical reinterpretation of the political thought of Thomas Hobbes and a new assessment of Hobbes s contribution to the origins and problems of modernity. The author argues that it is necessary to examine a neglected facet of Hobbes s thought his writings on history, especially Behemoth, his lengthy study of the English Civil War. Through a close reading of these works, Kraynak shows how Hobbes came to consider the possibility of a new kind of political science, one that is supremely confident of the power of critical reason to overcome the authorities of the past to build a new form of civilization yet uncertain about reason s foundations. In the first part of the book, Kraynak analyzes Hobbes s historical works and shows that they contain a coherent theory of the history of civilization whose central theme is the development of the human mind. Kraynak discusses how Hobbes came to attribute the chronic instability of civilization to the rise of the arts and sciences and to the doctrinal wars of intellectuals who sought recognition for their opinions as the authoritative wisdom of society. In later chapters, Kraynak explains Hobbes s solution to the doctrinal wars of the past: the process of enlightenment whereby the human mind is freed from the illusion of authoritative wisdom and asserts its autonomy or self-reliance; this process, Hobbes maintained, would begin that final stage of history and bring civilized people to a condition of "immortal peace" and "everlasting commonwealth." In the concluding chapters, Kraynak critically assesses Hobbes s utopian claim and suggests that Hobbes s inability to find an adequate grounding for the newly emancipated enlightened mind led to a modern dogmatism to new forms of mental enslavement and doctrinair-ism that would prove every bit as dangerous as those Hobbes sought to overcome. In clarifying Hobbes s historical theories and demonstrating their importance for his political science, Kraynak makes a major contribution to Hobbes scholarship and to current debates about the foundations of modern politics and culture. - ROBERT P. KRAYNAK is Associate Professor of Political Science at Colgate University. A graduate of Cornell University, he received his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University.
