Hardcover first edition - First printing. A study of wildlife in an area near a well-populated district of Seattle; the university is on the shores, and a ship canal runs through the bay - the contrast gave the authors a chance to study how wild plants and animals could live in harmony with their human neighbors: 'we could hear the honking cars which carried the noisy spectators from the games, while close to us. the bittern honked as it stood guard over its nest.' This book documents the result of the competition between man and wildlife for habitat - some wildlife adapts with little friction; others are driven to the verge of extinction. With the continued expansion of man into 'wild' areas, this book is probably more timely now than when it was written. Illustrated with drawings by Edmund J. Sawyer. Map endpapers. 315 pp. Near fine in a good only dust jacket (edgewear to dj, large chip on back cover.).
