Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Plain thick brown card boards with and jacket attached to spine, the latter had a chip top front corner, a poor spine secured full length by tear repair tape, which works reasonably well, but s[ine ends chipped and much of right hand side missing, top back (which has an advert for Electrolux cleaner) has small chip to top, 'several other short nicks. Twelve of the respondents (see below) appear on front. Author list+140 pp.+ (4, full page ads); faint edge-tanning throughout. To p.78 this has general observations on health, diet, relaxation, domestic life etc. but the remainder consists of short (half page or less mostly) questionnaire responses by eminent men and women and centenarians regarding diet, alcohol, tobacco, work hours, sleep hours, recreations, sports and health, these also include their age which tells us that these all date from 1927-1929 (after sampling 6 of the best known). They included Augustus John, George Bernard Shaw, David Low (the cartoonist), Compton Mackenzie, Baden Powell and Oliver Lodge. Another listing mentions an inscription dated 1930 and this fits with ages given. These responses however seem to tell us as much about their attitude to Henslowe's exercise as themselves. Apart from a book on Borneo Folk-lore Henslowe's main passion appears to be motoring & cars followed by health. A curious book and quite rare, but jacket pulls it down. 12 cm x 18 cm.
