Hardcover. Zustand: Good. This is an English translation of the classic French novel, "The Abbe Constantin" by Ludovic Halevy. When Halevy first offered his book to the French reading public it was welcomed with acclaim, for its simple story of good people eking a living in a small country village was such a change from the typical satiric fare that had been prominent in popular books. "The Abbe Constantin" was so popular that it was reissued many times by various publishers both in France, and in English translation in England and the United States. This is a translation into English, but the translator is not credited. This edition was issued circa 1897 by The Edwards Publishing Company in New York. It is a petite volume, measuring approximately 4 inches x 5 3/4 inches, and is bound in decorated cloth. Little books such as this were considered gift editions , and so we see by an inked inscription, that it was indeed given as a gift in 1897 (To Mrs Cowan for Christmas, from Laura. 1897). ************************ TITLE : The Abbe Constantin / AUTHOR : Ludovic Halevy (1834 - 1908) / TRANSLATOR : Not credited / IMPRINT : Edwards Publishing Co. / PLACE : New York / DATE : No Date - [but 1897] // Petite trade Hardcover; 210 pages; 4" x 5 3/4"; decorated light brown cloth-covered boards. Title in gilt on spine; spine and front board have decorative embellishments stamped in dark red. ***************************** CONDITION . A previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following noted : This copy shows modest wear, but is nice and clean. The rear end-papers have been neatly replaced. EXTERIOR Spine extremities are compressed and abraded with fraying just starting. Spine surface is moderately darkened, but gilt title remains fairly bright. Boards have modest surface rub . the rear board has a touch of scuffing. Text block edges are clean and unmarked. / BINDING The book has obviously been read, and so the text-block is hardly as tight as when issued, but the whole remains solid, with no detached or loose leaves. / END-PAPERS Front free end-paper has a neatly inked gift inscription. The rear end-paper has been neatly replaced. / INTERIOR Paper is slightly toned throughout. The interior is clean and free of writing, markings, or marginalia.
