Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. In German. 158 x 108 mm. Two books bound together. Paper covered boards. boards are worn at all edges, corners, scuffed. 158 x 106 mm. Nathan der Weise: [4], 240 pages. This is an early printing, but not the 1st printing of the 1st edition, with its misspelling on page 95 etc. Wer war wohl mehr Jude?: 118 pages. J. Karl Latich acknowledged the authorship of the 1783 work, a plagiarism of Nathan der Weise. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (January 22, 1729 Kamenz, Upper Lusatia, Saxony, Germany - February 15, 1781 Braunschweig, Brunswick, Germany) was a dramatist, critic, and writer on philosophy and aesthetics who helped free German drama from the influence of classical and French models and wrote the first German plays of lasting importance. His critical essays greatly stimulated German letters and combated conservative dogmatism and cant while affirming religious and intellectual tolerance and the unbiased search for truth. He published Nathan der Weise, a "dramatic poem" in iambic verse in 1779. It is a didactic play of a theological and philosophical nature, combining ethical profundity with many comic touches, and is a work of high poetic quality and dramatic tension. In Nathan der Weise Judaism, Christianity and Islam are depicted as having an equal ethical basis, and the play celebrates man's true religion, love, unprejudiced actions and devotion to the service of mankind. The representatives of the three religions are Nathan, Christian (the Templar) and Saladin. Only the Jew, in whose character Lessing paid tribute to his old friend Moses Mendelssohn, lives up to the ideal of full humanity; he alone is capable of complete self-abnegation and has the courage to speak the truth even to the mighty. At the end the main characters discover that they are blood relatives, which underscores their common membership in the larger family of mankind.

Vergleichsliteratur: Ausst. Katalog: Carl Friedrich Lessing 1808-1880.

Signed first edition of the author's masterpiece, and one of the greatest South African novels of the 20th century. This first edition was produced in a larger format than Lessing's other works of that vintage and, as a result, the top edges on most copies typically exhibit wear. On the present example this wear is trivial and this remains a much superior copy.

At 87, she was the oldest winner of the prize at the time. "Oh Christ!" I. Walch, Bibliographie du Saint-Simonisme, 101. Bel exemplaire. 1825.

A Classic of Art History PMM 213LESSING (Gotthold Ephraim ), LAOKOON : oder uber die grenzen der mahleren und poesie. mit beylaufigen erlauterungen verschiedener punkte der alten kunstgeschichte, Christian Friedrich Voss, Berlin 1766, 298pp. 8vo. FIRST EDITION. Lessing s most famous work outside Germany, and a classic of art history. In Laokoon, Lessing claims that certain arts have certain limits. The rules of poetry are not the same as those of sculpture or painting, each has its unique sphere. "Laokoon is perhaps Lessing's best-known work outside Germany, and it has had a world-wide influence . It contains the first clear statement of the truth, which is now considered axiomatic, that every art is subject to limitations, and can achieve greatness only by a clear understanding of and self-restriction to its proper function. The most telling passages, and those which have borne most fruit, are those on poetry . In the words of Macaulay, he was 'beyond all dispute the first critic of Europe'" (PMM 213).CONDITION: Original boards, seems to be re-backed, though certainly not modern, with renewed end-papers. The German philosopher and critic Gotthold Lessing was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment era; "it was he, more than any other who laid the foundations of the intellectual primacy of German writers and thinkers in the nineteenth century" (Printing and the Mind of Man 213). His Laokoon, probably his best-known work, had an enormous influence on the development of art and literary criticism: "[Laokoon] takes its name from the famous statue discovered at Rome in the sixteenth century. It analyzes the differences between the sculptor's treatment of Laocoon wrestling with the serpents and Virgil's treatment of the same theme, and from there does on to discuss the limits and limitations of all the arts. It contains the first clear statement of the truth, which is now considered axiomatic, that every art is subject to limitations, and can achieve greatness only by a clear understanding of a self-restriction to its proper function. The most telling passages, and those which have borne most fruit, are those on poetry . . . [Lessing's] exposition of the themes of Homer and Sophocles is especially effective, and he opened up a new prospect in the appreciation of Greek literature" (Printing and the Mind of Man). .

Erstausgabe
"Seltene erste Ausgabe. ? ? Unbeschnitten, alter Umschlag fleckig, Text gleichmäßig gebräunt und angestaubt. ? Goed. IV 1, 366, 47; Muncker S. 357; Seifert 1186; Sammlung Borst 61; VD18 10218327. ".

Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Gut bis sehr gut. 5 Bl., 415 S.; 1 Bl., 410 S., 2 gestochene Titelvignetten von J. W. Meil. Teils stockfleckig und gebräunt. Vereinzelt mit Bleistifteintragungen. Name im Vorsatz. Pappbände der Zeit mit Rückenvergoldung. Sauber repariert.
