Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 135 pages in the 1st series & 144 pages in the 2nd and this series dated 1831 a full 9 years later, so almost two books in their own right. With recto of final page having news of other Maria Hack books in the 1822 book, + 8 copper plate engravings inc frontispiece to the 1822 1st series and 9 inc frontis to volume 2. Original marbled paper boards and calf spine, spine worn titles obscured by rubbing and wear of opening, hinges thin, stringing showing, but all firm. the 2nd series is later quarter calf rubbed at spine with surface loss and marbled paper boards and new endpapers, but outside looks older than it probably is? Crease to outer corner of top board, endpapers browned, a full page ink inscription to FFEP "To Dearest Michael. Wishing him a happy birthday. With lots of love from Uncle Jack and Aunty Peggy. Sept 21st '39" (1939? Not 19th century hand) in volume 1 and some browning to plates and offsetting to some pages due to the plates in volume 2 but both are tight copies. An odd occasional spot of foxing, light though and a little handled feel to pages. Printed on quality rag paper. 12mo 1822. Scarce. *Published anonymously but by children's author Maria Hack. Harvey and Darton had an enviable reputation for publishing some of the best children's books and toy books in the world in the late 18th and early 19th century. 1st edition was 1821 and the 3rd edition wasn't until 1826 and the 2nd series much later in 1831.
