One of the earliest books written about Minnesota. Captain Seth Eastman was assigned twice to Fort Snelling; the second tour he brought along his wife. All four of the plates based upon his paintings are included here. The original cloth is worn, especially at the top of the spine. The chief fault of the book is foxing throughout the text, but less severe on the plates. Quite rare.

Lg.4to. , 121p., twenty-one fullpage engraved plates drawn by Seth Eastman, each with tissueguard present, blue cloth with full gilt decoration on boards and spine lettering. Beveled board edges. All edges gilt. Text about Minnesota and Native American populations there and elsewhere. Mr and Mrs Eastman was stationed at Fort Snelling from 1841 to 1848. Plates include Vasquez de Ayllon, Winnebago Wigwams, Saint Anthony's Falls, Massasoit with the Pilgrims, Skinning the buffalo, The Scalp Dance, Hunting Buffalo in Winter, Fort Mackinaw, Navajo Wigwams, Pueblo of Zuni New Mexico, etc. VG, occasional minor light foxing, light cover wear, uneven toning of cover; cover extreme tips bent gently inward. Binding secure. Hinges not cracked in or out.

Mrs. Eastman and her husband, artist Captain Seth Eastman, were stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota from 1841 to 1848, and it is those experiences which are drawn on here. All of the plates were executed by Seth Eastman. All 21 tissue guarded plates present. Original owner's name on front end paper. Intermittent foxing throughout. All edges gilt. Corners and spine ends rubbed. A round damp stain on front cover caused by a glass. Overall very well preserved in original covers. PayPal accepted.

The Eastmans depict in words and pictures from their own firsthand experiences the life and manners of Native Americans in the 1840s. Howes E18. Foxing, mostly light and marginal but occasionally in the image. A few pages toward the end partly detached. Some fading and light wear to spine ends. Very Good.
