First edition (hardback). 12mo (20cm by 13cm), xxxi, 150pp. Frontispiece and 50 plates, including a set of 27 pictures and etchings by Dan Meinertzhagen bound in at the back of the book. Original green cloth, gilt titling to the spine, gilt titling and design to the front board, top edge gilt. Some rubbing of the binding, light tanning of the text pages. Overall, this copy is in good to very good condition. This is one of a handful of copies with an additional section bound in - 31 pages (numbered i-xxxi) plus three portrait plates. This additional section is a life of Dan Meinertzhagen written by his mother. To quote from the first paragraph of this section: "My dear children - I am adding a few lines to this little book, and they will only be put into those copies that are destined to fall into the hands of Dan's nearest and dearest . they are not meant to go out in the world and face the colder criticism of strangers, at least not during the lifetime of his contemporaries". Dan Meinertzhagen was the older brother of naturalist Richard Meinertzhagen. This particular copy appears to have originally been given to Meinertzhagen's sister Margaret, whose married name was Margaret Booth, as the following inscription appears on the front free endpaper: "Zachary Booth, from his mother, 1934".
