New York, George Braziller, 1972 Bound, blue leatherlook binding with gilt decoration, illustrated cardboard box, 18,5x26cm., 262pp., beautiful colour illustrations. In good condition (cardboard box slightly damaged along the edges) ISBN 0807613592. This extraordinary manuscript, perhaps one of the gayest, most spontaneous and fanciful of Western illuminations, is an exceptionally rich Book of Hours painted by two quite different artists. In the late 1300s, Giovanni dei Grassi and his workshop painted the first folios for Giangaleazzo Visconti, Despot of Milan, but the Duke's death in 1402 interrupted the work. Belbello da Pavia completed this dazzling manuscript for Giangaleazzo's son, Filippo Maria, after he became Duke in 1412. Book is as new.

ABOUT THE BOOK:The Hours of Giangaleazzo Visconti (Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale, Banco Rari 397 and Landau-Finaly 22) is a Roman-liturgy, illuminated Book of Hours in Latin, which was commissioned by the ruler of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, in Italy in the late 14th century. A Book of Hours is a personal prayer book that contained, in part, the Hours of the Virgin, a daily devotional that was popular at the time. This particular Book of Hours was created by two master illuminators, beginning with Giovannino dei Grassi before his death, and completed by Luchino Belbello da Pavia. The Visconti Hours is a classic example of the personal prayer books of the period, which were generally made for wealthy lay persons. The book remained unfinished until after Visconti's (and the dei Grassi's) death. It is now in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence. Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover (Original Cloth). Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. title page in red & black; Around the year 1400, French culture was concentrated in Paris: artists, patrons and dealers flocked to. the French capital, producing a marvellous flowering of art. One of the greatest artists working at that time is known to us as the Master of the Hours of the Marechal de Boucicaut. His work, and especially his illustrations for the Book of Hours, was outstanding at the beginning of the 15th century in France and in the whole of Europe, including Italy. Scholars, since 1889, have recognized the exceptional quality of the Boucicaut Hours. In the early years of this century, Paul Durrieu acknowledged the Master of the Boucicaut Hours as pre-eminent in France, and since then he has begun to attract more attention. Erwin Panofsky in 1953 described him as 'the great pioneer of naturalism' in the representation of landscape and interiors, and in aerial perspective. He has now assumed a place alongside the Limbourg brothers in all accounts of late mediaeval painting and as a precursor of Jan van Eyck. In this book Professor Meiss presents for the first time a comprehensive and detailed study of the Boucicaut Master and his work. By penetrating and ingenious analysis, the author supports the suggestion that the Master is identifiable with a painter from Bruges, Jacques Coene. He establishes the artist's oeuvre and examines in great depth and detail all the manuscripts either completely or partly by the Boucicaut Master. Professor Meiss's astonishing awareness of stylistic distinctions enables the student to understand fully the nature and development of the artist himself, his associates and his workshop. There are nearly 500 illustrations, 14 of them in colour, to complement the text. The miniatures of the Boucicaut Hours are reproduced here in their entirety for the first time, while other important manuscripts in Paris, London, New York, Baltimore, Lucca and Seville, among others, are shown by many full-page -miniatures and a wealth of further examples offering a rich and comprehensive selection. 160 pages of text; 497 illustrations, 14 in colour. Size: Small Folio (over 12" -19" tall). 384 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket has small closed tears, but otherwise complete and overall sound. Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. 1st Edition. Stunning copy of "The Visconti Hours", recreated from the 2-volume Book of Hours of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, from the original in the National Library, Florence, Italy. George Braziller 1972 First Edition Thus. Condition: fine/fine/near fine. Supple leather-like boards in navy blue with gilt solar design on front board, gilt title and design on spine, corners sharp and square; fine condition. Text block clean, tight, square, unmarked, 262 pages. Very heavy semi-gloss ivory paper stock supports the 38 half- to full-page miniatures, 90 historiated initials, and stunning marginal depictions in the original size, as well as supporting text. Matte black hardboard slipcase with simulated velum front and spine title pastedown, and stunning illumination pastedown on back. Dimensions: 10.5" x7.5"x1.25". Near fine slipcase, sturdy with light signs of wear (a 2"x.5" lightly scraped area at bottom front and 2" superficial separation of back board; both shown in photos.) The Visconti Book of Hours was commissioned by Giangaleazzo Visconti, duke of Milan. Visconti enlisted Giovannino de Grassi, one of the most gifted painters of his time, to decorate and illuminate his Book of Hours. When Visconti died, the work stalled for a few years. Then Belbello da Pavia continued the work, which was completed under Giangaleazzo's son ca. 1430. The final product was an extravagant two-volume masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and is one of the most valuable manuscripts of European illumination. 34 pages of the book are embellished with full-page illustrations. The pages show creative depictions of biblical motifs in outstandingly vivid colors. Stunning margins embellished with flowers and plant tendrils frame the miniatures. Millard Meiss first saw the second volume of this book in 1947 in Florence, and not until 1969 did he see the first volume, which had been separated from the second for centuries, and finally acquired by the state of Florence (Italy). He immediately accepted the invitation to undertake a facsimile of this extraordinary work, along with descriptions of the art and its symbology.
NY 1972. Many full page color facsimile illus, 10x7", gilt-dec dark blue leatherette in slipcase.
