218pp + adverts, hardback titled in gold on spine and upper cover, though the stamping on the upper cover has been carelessly done and is at an angle. A good reading copy. An modern facsimile reprint of Powell Millington's account of his part in the expedition taken against the indigenous people of the north-eastern part of India between 1911 and 1912 following the murder of two British officials. The response from the British was punitive and by 1912 the area was brought under the control. This (Indian?) reprint does not give details of the publisher or date of publication of this copy but it is a modern facsimile reprint of a library copy as there is library numbers on the title page.

First edition. Octavo. x, 200, [4, publisher's ads] pp. plus a frontispiece photographic illustration of Lhasa. Publisher's light blue cloth, spne and cover lettering, as well as a pictorial image, in blue. Spine a bit browned but still a very good copy.In the words of the author, this is a common man's recollection of the Younghusband Expedition of 1903. This was entirely a military expedition bent on forcing Tibet to give favorable trade relations to England. Millington seems more concerned with getting home than in the Tibetan culture. In his recollections we will find no Noble Eightfold Path, no Twelve Links of Dependent Origin. We are including it as it is a popular book about Tibet meant for the masses. British expedition to Tibet, also known as the Younghusband expedition began in December 1903 and lasted until September 1904. The expedition was effectively a temporary invasion by British Indian Armed Forces under the auspices of the Tibet Frontier Commission, whose purported mission was to establish diplomatic relations and resolve the dispute over the border between Tibet and Sikkim. In the nineteenth century, the British had conquered Burma and Sikkim, with the whole southern flank of Tibet coming under the control of the British Indian Empire. There was a massacre of Tibetans by the British in 1904 at Chumik Shanenko. When they resisted the English advance and were defeated the Tibetans were mown down by the Maxim guns as they fled. Half a mile from the battlefield, the Tibetan forces reached shelter and were allowed to withdraw by Brigadier-General Macdonald. Behind them, they left between 600 and 700 dead and 168 wounded, 148 of whom survived in British field hospitals as prisoners. British casualties were 12 wounded.Discreet typographic bookplate of Peter Hopkirk, author of the seminal "Trespassers on the Roof of the World", the definitive book about Western incursions into Tibet for political reasons.
