Red cloth, front decorated with impressed black sprigs, gilt titles, black author name, rectangular vignette with figures in gilt and black setting and frame, and spine with gilt titles, black pictorial vignette, author name and other decoration. Front vg except sunned strip at top, spine faded and frayed at extremities, back spine fold covering split. Cracked back hinge, free back ep excised. Front epp complete, decorative foliage pattern in green. Owner's inscription dated 1884 on halftitle. Contents good on the whole, with lightly browned edges and some faint (finger?)marks, plus one tiny inkstain at one edge. Illustrated with engraved plates, one in colour, and additional drawings and chapter heading decoration. Frontispiece and 1 plate and 1 page loose, and one plate of the 4 is missing.
