Laid in is a faux copy of a 1973 Michigan House Resolution stating that Mudd was innocent in any complicity in the assassination of Lincoln. Signed on the front free endpaper by four of Mudd's grandchildren. Assembled by his daughter, a defense of convicted Lincoln assassination conspirator Dr. Samuel Mudd, the Maryland phyiscian who treated John Wilkes Booth's broken leg during his flight fter the murder at Ford's theatre. Historians consider the case against Mudd to quite weak and he was release after serving a 4-year prison sentence at Fort Jeffersona nd then Dry Tortuga Island. Letters he wrote during this imprisonment are reprinted here as are the formal statements of Mrs, Mudd, Mudd himself and Edward Spangler as well as General Ewing's argument over jurisdiction, law and facts in the case.

There also are two new illustrations: Dr. and Mrs. Richard D. Mudd sitting on the couch on which John Wilkes Booth was examined on April 15, 1865 by Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, and Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Home where Dr. Mudd set Booth's broken leg.
