? Erstausgabe
First edition of this scarce and important epistolary eyewitness account of the Second Anglo-Mysore War. Munro's handsome quarto book, printed by Thomas Bensley, a leading London printer, was published by subscription and the subscribers list runs to some 290 names - almost exclusively Scottish and with a strong military presence - taking around 335 copies. The Anglo-Mysore Wars pitted the forces of the East India Company (and their local allies) against Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. The second war (1780-84) was marked by two signal British defeats, at Pollilur and Kumbakonam, both inflicted by Tipu, the "Tiger of Mysore"; the commanding officer at each battle was imprisoned at Tipu's fortress at Seringapatam. Following these disasters, the British recalled the highly capable General Sir Eyre Coote - "brave and cool on the battlefield and a great tactician" (ODNB) who inflicted a stinging defeat on Hyder Ali at Porto Novo in July 1781. The war was concluded by the Treaty of Mangalore, which essentially restored the pre-war status quo. However, the Company was never going to be satisfied with this outcome and this phase of the establishment of British dominion in India was not concluded until Tipu's death at the Second Siege of Seringapatam in 1799. In his account, Munro does not limit himself to military matters and the first half of his eighteen letters are given over to social customs, laws, suttee, wildlife, topography, and much more. Innes Gun Munro (c.1759-1827), third laird of Poyntzfield, was a relative of Sir Hector Munro of Novar, second in command to Eyre Coote. In December 1779 he was appointed "to a lieutenancy in the 73rd, afterwards 71st, highlanders. As lieutenant and captain in the first battalion of that regiment he made the campaigns of 1780-4 against Hyder Ali" (ODNB). There was a charge of plagiarism against him for having borrowed from William Thomson's Memoir of the late War in Asia (1789) and Munro defended himself in a pamphlet entitled The Defence of Innes Munro, Esq. against a Charge of Plagiarism (1790). The excellent maps, all based on original drawings by Munro, illustrate the following battles: Hyder Ally's Attack at Congeveram; Porto Novo under Lt.-Gen. Eyre Coote; Polliloore; Sholangur; Veracundaloor; battle near Vellore; Arne; plan of Forts Trinquamallee & Osnaburg; Cuddalore. Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription at head of title page of John Gibson, possibly Lieutenant John Gibson, 2nd Bombay Native Infantry, died at Bombay 1807; and that of Alexander Henderson (with his dates added below, 1773-1833, and a brief note of the Henderson family (down to 1934) on front free endpaper; a Major John Henderson (HEIC) appears among the list of subscribers). Bruce 4154; Cockle, Military History of India, p. 15. Quarto (271 x 210 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf skilfully rebacked to style with the original red morocco label laid down, smooth spine decoratively gilt centre tooled and banded, two line gilt border on sides. Additional title page with engraved oval vignette of "A Looty-Wallah Chace" (a "Lootywallah" was a "plunderer", see Hobson-Jobson) engraved folding frontispiece view of Port Louis (Mauritius) by Benjamin Thomas Pouncy after Munro, and 9 folding battle plans by Woodman & Mutlow after Munro, Some foxing to plates, a few leaves with old splash marks in margins, otherwise a particularly good, wide margined copy.
