First edition. In later black buckram, with gilt title on spine. From the "Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik" (1905, vol. 20 and 21). 1-54; 1-110 p. First edition of Max Weber's Protestant Ethic, the founding text of economic sociology and one of the most important texts of general sociology. Max Weber (1864-1920) was a German sociologist and political economist, considered as one of the founders of sociology besides Émile Durkheim and Karl Marx. He studied law in Heidelberg and Berlin and after earning his law doctorate he started to teach commercial law in Berlin, and economics in Freiburg and Heidelberg, until 1903. Later he became the associate editor of the academic journal of social sciences, the Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik, where the present work, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, was first published in two parts in 1905. The Protestant Ethic is Weber's seminal and most famous essay in which he locates the origins of capitalism in the lifestyle characterized by ascetic Protestantism and opposes the Marxist concept of dialectical materialism and relates the rise of the capitalist economy to the Calvinist belief in the moral value of hard work. To this day this essay is considered one of the most important texts in sociology and economic history. . Annotated and underlined in pencil. Otherwise in very good condition. From the "Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik" (1905, vol. 20 and 21) First edition. In later black buckram, with gilt title on spine.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
2 SS. auf Faltbogen. Folio.

Erstausgabe
First edition of Weber's landmark work, issued as volume three of the series Grundriss der Sozialökonomik, here in the scarce parts issue - it was also issued in a stout single volume in blue cloth. Weber's Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft ranks among the classics of modern social science, in which he provided a more secure foundation for sociology and history by specifying the meaning of ideas and concepts that were widely in use at the time. "In Weber's major unfinished theoretical work, Economy and Society (1922). the work is structured around the antithesis between 'traditional' and 'rationalized' forms of action and organization in all spheres of social life and the transition between the two provides the key to the Weberian theory of modernization." (David Beetham in The New Palgrave). IESS (1922a). Eatwell, Millgate and Newman, eds, The New Palgrave - A Dictionary of Economics, 1987. Four parts, quarto. Original printed paper wrappers. Hosed in a custom blue buckram box. Fore edge of front wrapper to part I a little chipped, front wrapper to part III creased; very occasional pencil underlining or side-ruling; a very good copy rare in this condition.

This copy is in a superb state of preservation, with no foxing and a bright interior. This is further supplemented by personalized and lengthy inscriptions by both Weber and the two publishers who ran The Spiral Press to a New York Bookstore owner who offerd them their first genuine encouragement. This is copy No. 8 of 350 printed, with these embellishments boldly written inside the front cover. Weber gives thanks for the recipients encouragement of starving artists. He has signed the inscription, and has signed the final illustration in the rear. "This little-known book is one of the very few American livres de peintres published as early as the 1920's" (Garvey). VG, chipping to extreme top and bottom of spine. Interior is fresh and clean.

Erstausgabe
First edition of Weber's inaugural lecture on the national state and economic policy, given at the University of Freiburg, where he took up the chair of political economy in 1894. In the preface Weber writes that he only decided to publish this lecture because of the furore it created among the audience. "After early studies in the history of commercial law, he established himself as one of the leading figures in a new generation of historical political economists in the Germany of the 1890s. He was appointed to chairs in political economy at Freiburg in 1894 and at Heidelberg in 1896. Weber's early work in political economy can best be understood as reflecting the distinctive concerns of a younger generation of the historical school (including Schulze-Gävernitz, Sombart, Max and Alfred Weber). At the methodological level they sought to resolve the controversy between the theoretical and historical schools by demonstrating the theoretical character of the concepts used in historical economics on the one hand, and the historical presuppositions of theory on the other. An important element in this resolution was to secure the acceptability of the Marxian concept of 'capitalism' as a valid concept for economic analysis, despite the untenability (as they saw it) of the labour theory of value, and the exaggerated claims made for the materialist conception of history" (David Beetham in The New Palgrave). Octavo. Original wrappers, lettered in black. Small chip to bottom fore corner of front wrapper, one leaf opened a little roughly, otherwise an excellent copy.

1st UK Edition. [xii] + 1(a)-1(e) + 292pp. + [i]. Light age toning, sm. booksellers label to pastedown, original gilt lettered cloth, spine fadedand sl. chipped, fading intruding sl. onto upper board. Begun as a series of essays, the original German text was composed in 1904 and 1905, and was translated into English for the first time by American sociologist Talcott Parsons in 1930. It is considered a founding text in economic sociology and a milestone contribution to sociological thought in general. In 1998, the International Sociological Association listed this work as the fourth most important sociological book of the 20th century, after Weber's Economy and Society, Mills' The Sociological Imagination, and Merton's Social Theory and Social Structure. It is the 8th most cited book in the social sciences published before 1950. US$1397.
Stuttgart, Verlag von Ferdinand Enke, 1891. 8vo. Near cont. full green cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. Old library marking removed from bottom of spine. Extremities w. traces of wear. Inner hinges reinforced. Old stamps to verso of title-page. VIII, 284 pp + 2 plates. The rare first edition of Weber's influential Habilitationsschrift on Roman law and agrarian history, "Roman Agrarian History and its Significance for Public and Private Law".Maximilian Carl Emil Weber (1864-1920) is one of the most important founders of modern sociology and cultural sciences (together with Karl Marx and Émile Durkheim). His works have been, and are, of the utmost importance to the fields of sociology, corporational-, social-, musical-, political-sciences etc., and the terms and categories coined by him are now part of the normal vocabulary of these fields of study. In his groundbreaking Habilitationsschrift, which he published at the age of 27, Weber examined the economic, social and political developments of Roman society, and thus laid the foundations of his establishing of modern sociology. He examined the methods of land surveying in Roman society, the terms that were used for the resulting land units, and agricultural works written by Roman authors. As opposed to e.g. Durkheim, Weber took part in creating the antipositivist tradition, opposing the scientific methods of the social sciences to those of the natural sciences.Weber began teaching at the University of Berlin, and later he taught at the Universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Vienna and Munich. He greatly influenced German politics at the time, and he was appointed the advisor of the German negotiators at both the Treaty of Versailles and the drafting of the Weimar Constitution.Being without doubt the most important social theorist of the twentieth century and a principal architect of modern social science, Weber's seminal contributions helped form the new academic disciplines of sociology and public administration, and changed the way of perceiving law, economics, political science and religious studies. Most of Max Weber's works were published posthumously with the aid of his wife.
