Aus der Beschäftigung Morgensterns mit dem 1928 von John von Neumann veröffentlichten Artikel "Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele" erwuchs nach dem Zusammentreffen der beiden Wissenschaftler 1939 an der Princeton University nicht nur eine lebenslange Freundschaft. Vielmehr entstand aus ihrer Zusammenarbeit einer der bedeutendsten Beiträge zur Wirtschaftstheorie im 20. Jahrhundert: Mit der "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" (1944) schufen sie die Grundlage für die ökonomische Anwendung der Spieltheorie.
