FIRST OR EARLY ENGLISH EDITION circa 1880, 320 x 235 x 55 mm, 12½ x 9¼ x 2¼ inches, original publisher's red cloth, patterned black border to upper cover, large colour plate on upper cover (Mother shows book to children, Struwwelpeter and toys on floor, a poem about the book in panel at right), embossed decoration on untitled spine, the 3 edges are gilded, top and bottom carved with leaves, on fore-edge 9 tiny ivory knobs produce animal noises when pulled: Cock, Donkey, Lamb, Birds, Cow, Cuckoo, Goat, Children x 2. Description of book inside cover, title page on yellow panel with ornate border, a fierce horned head in the corners, "Made in Germany" at foot. 8 full page chromolithograph illustrations in yellow border, each faces a verse. Cloth faded on upper cover and spine, plate on upper cover darkened, poem faded, tiny water spot on lower cover, head and tail of spine slightly worn, 10 mm (½") split at foot of lower hinge, small bump to 1 corner of lower cover, 1 ivory knob missing, replaced with similar tiny metal knob, ivory knobs grubby-looking, the first sound a little weak, light fingermarks to some margins, page edges lightly browned, no inscriptions. A good copy. The Speaking Picture Book was originally produced in Nuremberg by Theodore Brand, the book s inventor. Brand obtained a German patent for the book in 1878, and a British patent a year later. French and Spanish translations followed. Haining, Movable Books, page 136.
