Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Kate Greenaway (illustrator). This is an American reprint consisting of two stories bound together: "The Lost Knife", and "A Wet Afternoon" (the illustrations for which are quite similar in style). The book was published in 1884 by Dodd, Mead and Company. Again, it is a reprint . the stories (at least "The Lost Knife") were first published in England, and then there are earlier reprints issued in the United States. Indeed there are several versions of the stories . several binding variants. As we can see from the nature of the illustrations, it is obvious that the plates for the book had been frequently, and heavily used. This was typical of popular juvenile works. According to World Catalog (OCLC), Kate Greenaway contributed the illustrations for this story ("The Lost Knife"). She is not credited in this edition, but the illustrations, at least many of them, are obviously by her hand. The binding on this copy is a generic publisher's trade binding. All the same it has a charm of its own. Dressed in an embossed cloth-covered board binding, colored black on deep ultramarine (blue), the front cover design depicts a boy looking over a fence . behind him is a horse. The boy holds a riding crop. There are flowers in the foreground, and birds roost in the rafters above. The title is lettered in black beneath the boy. In the upper right corner of the front cover is a generic paper paste-down chromolithographic illustration depicting a lovely young girl. The spine is blank. The title is lettered in black on the front. CONDITION - GOOD ONLY - This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable. The book has seen much use and has cracked hinges and is considerably shaken. However no leaves are detached, and the whole remains clean and attractive, use considered EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed and moderately abraded, with fraying just starting. Erstausgabe
First edition. Original boards, 8vo, 173 pages. 24 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates as ?A Cup of Comfort.? Book of Jewish ethics by Chief Rabbi of Czestochowa, published in 1933. The book proclaims that all of the modern misfortunes of the Jewish diaspora are not chance but are actually foretold in the Torah and attempts to bring comfort to readers by asserting that the Jewish future is also assured in the same religious sources. Notable, of course, is that this book concerning the misfortunes of the Jews is published in the year of Hitler?s ascendency, 1933. ?[Ash] was born into a religious Jewish family from Grodzisk near Warsaw. After graduating from Talmudic schools, he became a rabbi in Nieszawa, and since 1889 he worked in Czestochowa, where he performed the function of the rabbi with great commitment for over 40 years. He participated in patriotic ceremonies and maintained good relations with the bishop of Czestochowa, Teodor Kubina. He was also the rabbi of the Polish army garrison stationed in Czestochowa. He spoke out against almsgiving, suggesting to instead give loans to those in need. He was a member of the Zionist-religious Mizrachi organisation and charities Keren ha-Yesod and Keren Kayemet le-Israel. In 1935, he published a dissertation entitled In Defence of Ritual Slaughter, which was a voice in the discussion about the slaughter of animals and birds by Jews. The second edition of the book was distributed among all deputies of the Sejm [Polish Congress]. . During a service held in the synagogue on the anniversary of Jozef Pilsudski?s death, the rabbi had a heart attack and died a few hours later. He was buried at the Jewish cemetery in Czestochowa.? (Polin Museum) SUBJECT(S): Jewish ethics. OCLC: 233194141. OCLC locates only 3 copies wordlwide, all in Israel (Bar Ilan, NLI, TAU). Scarce Backstrip missing but cover otherwise strong and intact and text block is in excellent shape. In Good Condition overall. (YID-48-102).

Second edition (1st edition is Leeds, 1900). Original paper wrappers, small 8vo, 24 pages. 17 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as "Who Introduced Yom Kippur, and, Where Does the Torah Come From?" Rare pamphlet of two anti-religious essays by socialist and atheist writer Benjamin Feigenbaum. Benjamin Feigenbaum was a "Yiddish journalist, essayist, editor, and pamphleteer. Born in Warsaw, the son of Hasidic parents, he rejected the religious traditions in which he had been brought up and developed into a militant atheist and agitator for socialism. Leaving home, he proceeded in 1884 to Antwerp, in 1887 to London, where he wrote for Yiddish and Hebrew periodicals and published pamphlets on socialism, reaching the United States in 1891. In America, he joined the United Hebrew Trades, writing tracts to win the support of Jewish laborers for socialism and atheism. He also wrote for the Forverts and Arbeter-Tsaytung, and for the literary monthly Tsukunft, of which he was editor for a time. He wrote his essays under several pseudonyms including Shabbes, Shabsovitch, and Sh. Peshes. In 1900 he became general secretary of the newly formed Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle), which he established firmly before resigning in 1903. In 1909 he served as chairman of the mass meeting which sanctioned the general strike of the waist and dress trade, the so-called "uprising of 20,000" (Dubofsky & Miller in EJ, 2007). OCLC: 19313686.
