Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. Reprint. First published in 1867, this is a Doughty Library / Anthony Blond reissue of 1967. Top of page block dyed red as issued. The jacket is a bit of a mess. Edge wear, chipping, old tape marks and rubbing to top and bottom of pictorial dust jacket, Considerable loss to top and bottom of spine, quite well filled in by hand drawn repair pieces reproducing the original design, old tape marks and 'skinned' strips to inside flaps and endpapers, some slight overall time staining to unlaminated jacket, some yellowing and dust staining to page fore edges, internally cleanish, tight and square, overall an interesting copy. 537pp. 'Under Two Flags' was a best selling novel by Ouida and the most famous of her books. It tells the story of an English aristocrat, apparently in disgrace, who disappears and joins a French battalion in Algeria, loosely based on the Foreign Legion. It was made into a film several times in the years before and after WWI. Ouida (1839-1908), was the pseudonym of the English novelist Maria Louise Ramé (although she preferred to be known as Marie Louise de la Ramée). During her career, Ouida wrote more than 40 novels, as well as short stories, children's books and essays. Moderately successful, she lived a life of luxury, entertaining many of the literary figures of the day and was a literary inspiration to Jack London. Sadly, her lavish lifestyle eventually led her to penury, and her works were put up for auction to pay her debts. She died in Italy from pneumonia. Soon after her death, her friends organized a public subscription in Bury St Edmunds, where they had a fountain for horses and dogs installed in her name. Quite a scarce book.
