Spiral/Comb. Zustand: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in Patrick and Henry County, VA, are recalled in this informative book, a reprint of History of Patrick and Henry Counties Virginia by Virginia G. and Lewis G. Pedigo, and originally printed in 1933. Our brand new spiral-bound 11" x 8.5" book is printed on 60# paper. Because of the larger sized paper, each page contains 2 pages from the original book. The colorful front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The history of the two counties is often mixed together in the first section of the book. Subjects include Early Settlers -- farming, travel, social life, and a recollection of The Tournament held in early years complete with knights and a grand ball (by John Redd Smith); a look at the tobacco industry in general and the R.J. Reynolds Co. in particular is written by Major A.D. Reynolds; the book "Partisan Leader" by Judge Beverly Tucker prophesying the secession movement and set in Patrick County; the War Between the States; Slavery; Henry County, including Martinsville (by Smith); the Henry County Bar; Scenery in Patrick county; Famous court cases; Churches; Patriotic Societies, Business Women's club; Public Schools; Names of soldiers in the Revolution; Ridgeway; Early Days in Winston-Salem; and a section called "Our Faithful Colored People". The book also included a long list of Henry County and Patrick County Grants or Patents with names, dates and locations. The biographic portion of the book contains biographies of many families and individual residents of the two counties. Some of these are brief, but others include family members, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on news events. Patrick Henry, for whom the counties were named, is one of those included. Other family names listed are: Abingdon, Allen, Anderson, Anglin, Anthony, Barbour, Barker, Barrow, Bassetts, Booker, Bouldin, Brown, Bryant, Bullard, Burch, Calloway, Carter, Clanton, Clark, Coan, Coleman, Craghead, Critz, Dalton, Dandbridge, Davis, Deshazo, Dillard, Donegan, Drewry, Dudley, Dyer, English, Finley, Fontaine, Ford, France, Fuller, Garrett, Gravely, Greer, Griggs, Hairston, Harbour, Hill, Hodges, Hooker, Hughes, Hundley, Jamison, Jones, Kearfott, Keesee, King, Koger, Lavinder, Lybrook, Martin, Matthews, Mitchell, Moir, Morris, Mullins, McCabe, Nowlin, Pannill, Parrott, Payne, Pedigo, Penn, Perkins, Rangeley, Read, Reamey, Redd, Reynolds, Ross, Schoolfield, Schottland, Shackelford, Shelton, Smith, Sparrow, Spencer, Stanley, Staples, Starling, Stephens, Stone, Stovall, Stuart, Stultz, Taylor, Terry, Thomas, Townes, Tudor, Tuggle, Turner, Waller, Watkins, Whittle, Williamson, Witten, and Zentmeyer.
