Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. San Francisco: A. Roman, 1882. Thick 8vo. 840pp. Frontispiece, 58 b/w full-page and 104 text illustrations, 1 full-page map. Red pictorial cloth, gilt. Marbled edges. Very good. As an encyclopedia of expeditions to the North Pole, this work is divided into six chronological sections. Part 1 focuses on early explorers and knowledge of the Arctic from antiquity to the early 17th century, while part 2 recounts Arctic voyages from the early 17th to mid-19th century, like those of Bennet, Poole, and Fox. Part 3 describes the first Arctic expeditions of the 19th century, including Parry's voyage and Franklin?s early journeys. Part 4 is dedicated to Franklin?s last voyage and subsequent efforts to locate his crew. Part 5 deals with more recent polar expeditions, such as those led by Koldeway, Hall, and Nares. The final section describes the perilous journey of the Jeannette expedition led by George W. De Long. Includes a preface, list of authorities, table of contents, list of illustrations, and index. With this work, the author hoped to "drive out of general circulation the mass of poisonous trash that is suffered to represent, or misrepresent, our current literature.".

Buch
xvi,(2),19-840 pp. Octavo. Bound in the original maroon red cloth with with black stamped decoration on the front board. Gilt title on spine. Beveled boards. Original patterned endpapers. Text block with marbled edges. Over 200 engravings both in text and a single full page map. Very slight fading to the spine. Slight wear to the edges otherwise a much superior copy of the book. Arctic Biblio. 13318. A general history of all arctic exploration from the Vikings to Delong. I suspect the book came out to capitalize on the Delong Expedition and the interest in the Expedition being lost. Overall it is a very think and somewhat poorly produced production which is very familiar in Subscription titles like this. Still not a common title and more so to find a collectable copy like this example.
