Oblong folio (326 x 450 mm). [2 leaves], 62 pp. 21 chromolithographic or tinted lithographic (5) plates by Abraham Lundquist, printed on thick paper and mounted on card with printed captions; wood-engraved illustrations in text. (Without the map). Text stab-stitched, plates loose as issued, in original green pebble-grained cloth gilt portfolio, sides with blind-stamped ornamental borders, front cover with gold-stamped title and large gold-blocked vignette of a reindeer pulling a man in a sleigh (ties and endpapers renewed). First edition of an account of travels made through Lapland in 1850-62 by the author, a naval officer who had been commissioned by Charles XV to carry out astronomical surveying, illustrated with marvelous chromolithographic views. Lundquist's lithographs, characterized by a masterful and restrained use of color, capture the feel of the wild Lapp landscape with its variegated sky and vast mountainous expanses; the tinted views convey the special monochromatic beauties of the sub-Arctic, others, with a hint of coloring, perfectly mirror the tenderness of the late northern spring; and one, infused with melting shades of rose and orange, shows the sunset at a summer lakeside encampment. Many scenes show Sami natives and their hamlets, typically a few wooden dwellings and a church in a stockade. Hiler p. 705 ("ca. 1860") . Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
