Blank, half-title/tirage, title, [1p.], vi-viii, [3pp.], pp-4-134, [1p.]. Number 93 of 96 copies on Hollande from a hand numbered edition of 100 with 4 on Chine. II. Endpaper, blank, half-title/tirage, title, [1p.], xi-ix, [4pp.], pp-4-57, [2pp.]. Number 56 of 96 on Hollande from a complete run of 102 hand numbered copies with 6 on Chine and an extra two copies on peau ve?lin. Rebound with the original uniform green paper wrappers and the spine for ?Le Chancre' , titles in black, publisher's catalogues on lower portions into twentieth century red shagreen, four raised bands on spine, gilt titles and ruling in the two compartments, marbled endpapers, Daniel De Bruin's illustrated ex libris plate on binder's front free endpaper, French texts. Geneva, J. Gay et fils, E?diteurs, 1868 & 1867. £300.00 Extensive bibliographical annotation by a Francophone bookseller or collector on binder's front free endpaper and inside front cover of the De Rosset. De Rosset lacks a spine and Polman is missing some of the spine, some light foxing of the first few pages of each, light, endemic browning. Gay 532. The Polman is uncommon but the de Rosset is very rare in both commerce and institutions with seemingly two copies only, under a variety of listings, on WorldCat at the BL and the BnF. Provenance: the heraldic artist and book collector Daniel De Bruin's copy (with his ex libris illus- trated with nudes) to the Bibliothe?ques of Jean-Pierre Faur and Emmanuel Pierrat. Obscure reprints of obscure seventeenth-century texts in a series of 'Rarete?s bibliographiques' issued by Gay et fils. The meaning of the first title, which is a discussion of female nudity, modesty and dress by a Canon considered in response to 'ecclesiastical approbations' (Gay), eludes the mod- est language skills of this cataloguer, perhaps it is something like: 'The Canker or The Female Breast Cover, With; Of The Veil and Hat' or perhaps it relates to a ssyphilitic ?chancre'. The work is dedicated to Louise de Lorraine Princesse de Ligne, who took to the veil after her husband's death. Jean De Rosset's portraits of the elegant women of Montpellier are worshipful to the point of obsession, he loves all noble women it seems, including, to his credit perhaps, an old woman of great warmth and beauty. Most sources attribute the work to Franc?ois de Rosset, and a reprint from the '80s calls for Thomas de as does the Folger for the first edition. The Montpellier Mediatheque has the manuscript for this title by Jean, a doctor and lawyer, born in Montpellier in 1632 and the grandfather of Pierre Fulcrand de Rosset, au- thor of ?L'Agriculture. Poe?me ' . 219433.
