His answer, made fascinating by a close look at individual popes and the lower clergy, is a resounding "not many." What's more, author Rappoport writes that, while "some shining examples of virtue and piety have occupied the throne of St. Peter," they have been outnumbered by "impious men, not Popes, but monsters." The purpose of this book is twofold. On the one hand it was written to point out the influence of women upon the government of the Catholic Church through some intriguing~albeit illicit~relationships with its pontiffs and clergy, and, on the other, to show the immorality of the Catholic clergy and how such immorality was the direct and necessary result of the law of enforced celibacy, which was instituted by Pope Gregory VII, himself a "Don Juan," claims the author. Readers may or may not be surprised to learn that in the ninth century the disorder and crimes of passion in the Church were such that the King of England was obliged to issue special laws to put a stop to the irregular life. About the clergy he said, "The pious souls weep over their crimes, whilst the impious are laughing." Before giving readers a close look at specific affairs and intrigues centered around the Vatican (Chapters IV through X), author Rappoport briefly sketches the love affairs of the lower clergy (Chapter I); gives an account of the tenth and eleventh centuries, which were especially rich in gallant intrigues, "disrespectable and corrupt" bridegrooms of the Church, and general debauchery (Chapter II); and provides a captivating telling of the story of Pope Joan, the woman who some believe attained to the headship of the Church (Chapter III).
