Some of these stories will make you laugh out loud while others will bring a tear to the eye of even the toughest disposition. Ruark was one of America's most enduring writers whose hunting and outdoor stories are timeless. His work transcends generations, and his words delight readers regardless of age. The Lost Classics will have you reminiscing of bygone days while you read about "The Old Man and the Boy," "Stories from Down Home," "The Boy Expands His Horizons," and "Papa Hemingway." The final section includes stories that Ruark wrote about himself and is entitled "Ruark on Ruark." Includes a lengthy biographical sketch by Dr. Jim Casada as well as a detailed bibliographical appendix on all of Ruark's books and papers. .

Buch
Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 1995). (1953) ND recent reprint of 1987 Safari Press edition. 8vo (160 x 235mm). Ppx,310. B/w photographs, b/w illustrations by the author. Red boards, spine titled in black. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. "In the early 1950s famous newspaper columnist Robert Ruark and his wife, Virginia, went to British East Africa (now Kenya and Tanzania) for a nine-week safari with their professional hunter Harry Selby. The three of them, along with a group of native runners, a Jeep, and an old lorry, ventured into the bush for an adventure none of them soon forgot - and neither will you! In this book Ruark shares with you the ferocity of the wounded buffalo and the acid sweat of fear - no other book will give you the 'feel' of Africa like this one can. This is what one of our readers had to say: 'If you've ever dreamed of going on a safari in Africa, but don't have the money or the gumption, this is about as close as you'll come to the real thing. I've read a few books about safaris, hunting in Africa, etc. (like Peter Capstick), but this is what I always imagined it would really be like. If you've stumbled upon this book by accident and don't know who Robert Ruark was, you're in for a treat. Ruark was a journalist, author, and big-game hunter who wrote from the late 40s until his death in the mid 60s. He was hugely popular during his lifetime, but now has been almost totally forgotten. .This book contains Ruark's own tale of his first safari in Africa in the early 1950s and is an incredibly entertaining and detailed account of safaris. .It really is as if you are sitting with Ruark at the end of a hard day hunting enjoying a cocktail around the campfire. For anyone interested in safari hunting or safari literature, this is a must own/must read.'" .

Zustand: new. (Hardcover, 2010). (1991) 2010 new edition. 8vo (155 x 235mm). Pp256. B/w illustrations by Bruce Langton, map. Blue boards, spine titled in black. Fine copy in dust-wrapper. "If ever a time and a place had a profound effect upon a man, that time was the 1950's, the place Africa, and the man Robert Ruark. In Africa, the author .finally grew up. .Just as Africa changed Robert Ruark, Ruark watched first hand as Africa changed itself, and not always for the better. Ruark witnessed the terror of the bloody Mau Mau Emergency, but he left Africa before changing political climates, uncontrolled poaching, and open warfare left a land desolate and hunters, seeking solitude, little to enjoy. [This book] spans the years from his first safari, when Horn of the Hunter was born, to a story published just two months before he died. These stories now appear for the first time in book form, presented with special permission from Ruark's heirs and estate, chosen for what they reveal of Ruark both as a writer and a man." .

British first edition (with Frederick Muller requisite "First published . . ." statement upon copyright page) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 256 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 12.75cm. Dust jacket with color pictorial front panel and spine; some rubbing with nicks, scuffs, and some creasing at edges; soiling to white rear panel; slender toning along folds and at top of flaps; front flap retains publisher's printed price at bottom corner; dj presented in an older Demco mylar protector. Author's seven-line black wax pencil inscription "For Rachel and | Jack - such | nice pickups | on the Costa | Brava, | Best | Bob Ruark" on the front free endpaper. This British first of GRENADINE ETCHING was issued some seven years after Doubleday published the first American edition in 1947 but, nonetheless, inscribed/signed copies of Ruark's first novel are exceptionally uncommon. Acquired from the estate of entomologist and big game hunting aficionado Dr. David F. Young, Jr. (1922-2017) who, for many years, chaired the Extension Entomology Department at Mississippi State University but with no preceding provenance known. Although the inscription is undated, Ruark likely signed the book in his final five years of life during which he resided in London, Barcelona, and, most coincidently, Sant Antoni de Calonge in Spain's Costa Brava region.
