Zustand: very good. 1st UK Edition. xxxv, 392; x449pp. Octavo, Original red decorated cloth. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Numerous photo plates, maps, some folding. Minor wear and a bit of spotting on the endpapers. Old library stamp, marked withdrawn on the front endpaper of each volume, otherwise a clean attractive copy. Both volumes signed and dated by Victor Campbell on the front paste downs. Spence 16. Taurus Collection 71, Rosove 9.A1 First edition in English, published the year before the New York edition and quite scarce. Amundsen had originally planned an expedition to repeat Nansen's drift with the Fram through the Arctic Ocean, and presumably to try for the north pole, but support for the project fell with the announcement of Cook's & Peary's accomplishments. He then turned toward the south, even though Scott's plans to attempt the south pole were well known, and was severely criticized (mostly in Great Britain) for competing with Scott. The two polar journeys were in marked contrast, and form part of one of the greatest dramas of exploration - Amundsen made the trip with dogs and skis, and with little difficulty, reaching the pole a month before Scott's party; Scott and four others reached the pole, but died on the return, just short of safety, after an heroic but ill-planned trip, dragging their own sleds. This set bears the ownership and annotations of Lieut. Victor Campbell, who was in charge of the Northern party. See colour illustration. Included is a copy of the Wicked Mate, the Antarctic Diary of Victor Campbell edited by H.G.R. King.

First edition. Two volumes, 8vo. In the publisher's attractive blue pictorial cloth, with a design of penguins surrounding an inset photograph with coloured flags (Rosove variant d). Lettered in gilt, with further decoration in gilt to the spine. All edges marbled. A beautiful, fine set, the cloth clean and the gilt bright, with none of the usual wear. A very small closed tear to one of the maps in Vol. II. Extensively illustrated, with forty full-page plates and 306 further illustrations in the text. Three large maps to rear of volume two, and three smaller sketch maps. A beautiful set of Amundsen's account of his attainment of the Pole, written and published before the fate of Scott and his men was known. The lavishly decorated binding is an indication of the celebration of Amundsen's achievement, standing in contrast to the more utilitarian design used for the English edition later that year. This set is in the uncommon variant binding of smooth cloth, with the coloured Norwegian flag to the inset photograph, and contains the binder's blank leaf at the front of each volume. Rare in such fine condition. "Amundsen's modest account of his extraordinary South Pole exploit is a classic in the exploration literature" (Rosove). Rosove 8.A2.d. Taurus 70.

With 24 maps and charts (some folding) and 94 photographic plates. XXXV,392; X,438 pp.First English edition; first published in Kristiania in 1912: Sydpolen: den Norske Sydpolsfaerd med 'Fram' 1910-1912. - The Norwegian explorer Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872 - 1928) left Norway in June 1910 on the ship Fram. When he received the news that the British polar explorer Scott was already on his way to the South Pole, Amundsen changed his plans and set his sights on arriving there before him. Scott's and Amundsen's expeditions were both now heading for the South Pole in 1911. His party established a camp at the Bay of Whales and a series of supply depots on the Barrier (now known as the Ross Ice Shelf) before setting out for the pole in October. The party of five, led by Amundsen, became the first to successfully reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911, four weeks before Scott. He was a key figure of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. - A very fine copy.Conrad p.156; Spence p.4; Howgego III, A12; Rosove 9.

First edition in book form, first printing, of Amundsen's "legendary dash to the Pole, in which he gained priority over Robert Falcon Scott's British Expedition by a month" (Books on Ice). On his return, Sydpolen was written quickly and issued in 40 parts between May and September 1912, soon followed by this "splendidly baroque cloth bound version" (Taurus). "His success over Scott was due to highly disciplined dogsled teams, more accomplished skiers, a shorter distance to the Pole, better clothing and equipment, well-planned supply depots en route, including more nutritious food with plenty of B vitamins, fortunate weather, and a modicum of luck. Amundsen and four of his colleagues reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911, carefully plotted their location, left messages for Scott and King Haakon VII, and then returned to their Framhein base on January 25, 1912, only nine days after the disheartened Scott party reached the Pole" (Books on Ice). Amundsen's exploits were a great source of pride in newly independent Norway. Provenance: with the bookplate of the Swedish mathematician Severin Wigert on the front pastedowns. Wigert (1871-1941) created the Stieltjes-Wigert polynomials and worked on the divisor function. His elaborate bookplate is by the Swedish artist and book historian Arthur Sjögren (1874-1951). Books on Ice 7.1 for the first edition in English; Howgego III A13; Rosove 8.A2c; Taurus 70. 2 volumes, octavo. Original light blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt with gilt penguin vignette, front covers lettered in gilt and pictorially stamped in dark blue with photographic onlay to centre within gilt roundel, blue endpapers, marbled edges. With 40 half-tone photographic plates, 11 maps and plans (2 double-page and 3 folding). Spine slightly rubbed and cockled (possibly as a result of cleaning), boards unusually bright, vol. I with neat repair to rear inner hinge. A very good copy.

ONE OF THE SCARCEST AND MOST IMPORTANT POLAR TITLES, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Norwegian captain Roald Amundsen had initially intended make an expedition to the Arctic, but changed his plans at the last moment and announced he would try for the South Pole instead. His explanation to the public was that if he could beat the English and Japanese expeditions to the Pole then he could secure success and funds for his extensive Arctic expedition, and also snatch the prize for his own country. So , unbeknownst to Scott, Amundsen sailed southward in the Fram to the Bay of Whales that would afford his expedition both the shortest route to the Pole and a route that would not overlap with either the Japanese or the English expeditions. From start to finish, Amundsens expedition ran like clockwork. He carefully planned every moment of the trip, using his experience in the Arctic and his extensive knowledge of dog-teams to help him through. His team was entirely Norwegian, accustomed to a harsh and cold climate, and were excellent ski-runners. In addition, Amundsen traveled light; he brought five men and fifty dogs on his expedition so that the latter could eventually serve as food for the former. Part of what doomed Scotts party was the fact that he favored men and ponies over dogs, bringing twelve men, eight ponies, and only twenty-six dogs. Amundsens party remained in excellent health and always had enough to eat from their plentiful provisions at their well-stocked supply depots. They also supplemented their food stores with a great seal hunt just before the winter, after which 120,000 lb. of fresh seal meat were added to their stores, which helped protect them against scurvy. Unlike Scotts party, Amundsens party were also fortunate enough to have favorable weather conditions on their side, so that they were able to reach the Pole using their supply depots and dog sleds in just 99 days, a distance of 1860 miles, covering an astonishing average of 19 miles a day over frozen and difficult ground. Their journey was truly an extraordinary accomplishment, and Amundsens account of it is no less riveting.
