Both the endpapers are present and foxed a medium tan tone--this foxing extends into the text for two or three pages--rest of the text is almost fox-free and in very nice condition. Rest of the book seems tightly bound.
Verlag: S. Backus, & Co., Bridgeport, 1809
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Second American Edition. Bridgeport: S. Backus, & Co., 1809. Supposedly Johnson wrote this in only one week; it was first published in 1759. Often compared to Voltaire's "Candide" but in no way to be considered anti-religious. It was published in America some nine years later. This is a Very Good copy of the Second American Edition (stated), which is uncommon to rare. Full leather binding with ruling, decorations, and titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; xxviii (Blagdon's "Life"), viii (Contents), then 169 pages. The half-title before the Contents Page mis-spells "Rasselas (damnable colonists!). The "Miscellaneous Poems" are added without continuous pagination (pp. "208-206"). Spotting, mainly to the end-papers. The leather is quite well-rubbed all around, but remains sound, with no cracking; the spine lettering is faint but can be made out. A solid copy of this important book. Second American Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall.

Regarding this monument of scholarship and wit, first published in 1755, little needs be said. Every page possesses a joy.".

Leather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A marvellous and scarce edition of this standard dictionary of the English language. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English poet, essayist, biographer and literary critic. He published 'A Dictionary of the English Language' in 1755, considered the foremost dictionary of the time until the Oxford English Dictionary was published 173 years later. It took him seven years to complete the dictionary, which he compiled alone. It cites authors such as Shakespeare, Milton and Dryden in its examples. This is a beautiful work in a lovely binding, containing a history on the origin of the English language as a prefix.Contains a bookplate to the front pastedown belonging to an Arthur Gardner with his family crest. In a full diced calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed, some fading and small loss to the leather, some rubbing to the spines, joint of vol I cracked about four inches. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound, pages a little age toned, some spotting heavier to the first and last pages. Very Good. book.
