Reprint 2001, original 1933. SB xxiii + 594 pp with 24 illusPublished Price £22 This is a remarkably detailed history of the Royal Engineers in India beginning with the first British Enginers at the time of the establishment of the East India Company. Since the Engineers were present at all the wars involving East India Company soldiers and later the Indian Army, this is, in fact, a history of that Army over nearly 300 years to 1932. What makes the book so unique is that it is concerned solely with India & expeditions launched from there. There are accounts of the Mysore, Maratha, Nepalese, Burma, Afghan & Sikh Wars. The Indian Mutiny is covered in great detail - companies of the Bengal Sapper and Miners were among the mutineers. We read of siege warfare in practice - breaching batteries, tunnelling, mining, blowing obstacles & paving the way for infantry assault. There are also accounts of more peaceful activities such as the construction of roads, forts but by and large, it was a life of active service. Reorganizations of the Indian Army, the creation of the Bengal, Bombay & Madras Sappers & Miners (a gradual evolution from the original pioneer companies) are fully covered. In the Great War we follow the Sappers to the Western Front, to Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, Persia and East Africa. This is a fine book, a worthy tribute to the British Officers of the RE who served with the Indian Army Sappers & Miners and to their men. There is a very good index.

Buch
2022 reprint (of original pub). xxxii 571 pp., with 35 mapsPublished Price £25 In October 1933 the author was in the process of completing his second volume of the history of his Corps in India when he was asked to compile a similar history dealing with the achievements of the Corps in Egypt and the Sudan, where he had never served. Obviously a man of great energy and commitment, he began researching for this book in September 1934, toured Egypt and the Sudan from January to March 1935 and began writing on his return to England; in two years he had completed his task and immediately began his next project - the history of the three regiments of Indian Army Engineers, or Sappers and Miners as they were called. In this history his declared aim has been to produce an accurate and comprehensive, but essentially readable narrative, avoiding technicalities, and concentrating as much as possible on the work of the engineers, and on the men themselves. He has divided it into two parts, Part I deals with the achievements of the RE in all the campaigns in Egypt and the Sudan from 1800 onwards, beginning with Napoleonâ s unsuccessful invasion of Egypt and on through the campaign of 1882 (against Arabi Pasha), Osman Digna, the Mahdi, Gordon, Kitchener, Dongola Expedition of 1896, Omdurman, the Fashoda Incident and on to 1914-1918, the defence of the frontier and the Suez Canal and post-war operations. Part II describes the work of the RE in various civil departments encompassing such subjects as irrigation, railways, erecting telegraph lines amid such hazards as wild elephants and crocodiles (one lineman was taken by a crocodile), survey and exploration, archaeology and geology. With every chapter there is one or more sketch-maps showing the places mentioned in that chapter, or the dispositions of the forces engaged in a battle and the contemporary photos are most interesting. Colonel Sandes has certainly achieved what he set out to do, write an informative and entertaining history.Overseas clients please note: Due to excessively high wrapped weight shipping is weighted on this title.

Buch
2023 reprint (of original pub). xxix 534 pp., with 25 mapsPublished Price £28 The Indian Army began the war, in 1939, numbering just under 200,000 men. By the end of the war it had become the largest volunteer army in history, rising to over 2.5 million men in August 1945. Serving in divisions of infantry, armour and a fledgling airborne force, they fought on three continents, in Africa, Europe and Asia. The Indian Army fought in Ethiopia against the Italian Army, in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia against both the Italian and German Army, and, after the Italian surrender, against the German Army in Italy. However, the bulk of the Indian Army was committed to fighting the Japanese Army, first during the British defeats in Malaya and the retreat from Burma to the Indian border; later, after resting and refitting for the victorious advance back into Burma, as part of the largest British Empire army ever formed.
