Erstausgabe
hardcover. Zustand: poor. First. Revised & corrected by Ferdinando Stith. 216pp. Short 8vo, original calf (quite worn but holding; most of leather of spine lacking, dampstain in lower gutter; several pages dog-eared). Arrow Rock [Missouri]: Published by the author, 1844. A poor but usable copy. First edition of the first medical book printed in English west of the Mississippi River. An early exponent of the value of quinine for the treatment of malaria, and finding the drug unavailable in the malaria-ridden western and southern states, Sappington began in 1832 the wholesale distribution of "Dr. John Sappington's Anti-Fever pills." Over 1,000,000 boxes of these were sold throughout the western and southern states. In the above work Sappington described his method of preparing his quinine-containing pills, and advocated quinine, properly used, as the only necessary treatment for malaria. "Although living in a frontier community far removed from the seats of medical learning, Sappington's views regarding the treatment of fevers were more in accord with modern medical practice than were those of his more favored contemporaries." (DAB).

Full-Leather. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Full contemporary calf, spine panel lettered in gilt. xx,21-216 pp. Leather typically rubbed, with some exposure/rounding to corners. Front flyleaf and adjacent blank show creasing closed tears near binding from a former repair attempt. Interior typically foxed. Sappington was the first physician in Missouri to publish a book (cf. Perotti, Important Firsts in Missouri Imprints). Former owner's signature in pencil on upper front flyleaf. Dr. Sappington, although practicing frontier medicine, had a sophisticated understanding of new developments. While refuting the drastic methods of purging and bleeding still prevalent in his profession, early on he recognized the importance of the commercial synthesis of quinine for the malaria-ridden districts of the Southern and Western states. He devoted his life to making it available to these areas, through the wholesale distribution of anti-fever pills containing this drug, and his published writings. Sabin 76909. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Book.

First edition; 12mo, pp. xviii, 19-216; good, sound textblock, without covers. First medical book published in Missouri, and according to Reese, this is the "first medical text printed in English west of the Mississippi River. Although the title page infers that this is a later edition, it is the only edition listed in any of the standard references, including the NUC. Sappington moved to Missouri in 1817 after studying medicine with his father, a physician in Tennessee, and attending medical lectures at the University of Pennsylvania." DAB notes: "Sappington's life may be said to have been devoted to the cause of quinine. In the early development of the Southern and Western states, malaria was so prevalent that it was one of the greatest obstacles with which the early settlers had to contend. Soon after quinine (isolated from the Peruvian Bark in 1820) became available in the United States, Sappington recognized its specific nature in the treatment of malaria, and strongly advocated its use.In [The Theory and Treatment of Fevers] he gave in detail his method of preparing his quinine-containing pills and advocated quinine, properly used, as the only thing necessary to cure malaria." FIRST EDITION. Wrappers; scattered browning, minor repairs on a few leaves. First edition. This work is not scarce, but it has a most interesting provenance and history, recorded in manuscript on the front flyleaf. The book apparently belonged to a Dr. J. W. Moodey of Greensburg, Indiana, who writes of Sappington's pioneer use of quinine pills as a treatment for fevers. Dr. G. W. H. Kemper received the book in 1867, and gives an account of the copy in the catalogue of the St. Louis Medical History Club, noting that the work was the first medical book printed in Missouri. Sappington (1776-1856) describes numerous diseases, their causes, symptoms and treatment. A significant work in American medicine.
