Bedeutender Vertreter der Schweizer Radierkunst des Klassizismus. Sohn von Johann Ulrich Schellenberg, Schwiegersohn von Johann Rudolf Huber. 1748 Übersiedelung nach Winterthur. Gemeinsam mit Anton Graff Ausbildung in der Zeichenschule seines Vaters, später Arbeit in dessen Werkstatt. Versuchte sich danach in Basel in Landschafts-, Genre- und Bildnismalerei. Zog nach Zürich, um für Johannes Gessner naturhistorische Zeichnungen nach Insekten anzufertigen, so für Johann Heinrich Sulzer Kennzeichen der Insekten (1761). Insgesamt entstanden etwa 3800 entomologische Zeichnungen, teilweise veröffentlicht in seinem Genres des mouches (1803). Bedeutend waren seine Illustrationen für Johann Caspar Lavaters Physiognomische Fragmente (1775-78). Seine Illustrationen schmücken hunderte von Werken. Er war Lehrer von Johann Georg Penzel, Johann Heinrich Lips, Emanuel Steiner und Johann Jakob Biedermann.Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726 Danzig - 1801 Berlin). Deutscher Kupferstecher, Grafiker und Illustrator. Bedeutender Vertreter der Kunst des Deutschen Klassizismus. Begann 1740 zunächst eine kaufmännische Lehre. Ab 1743 in der Haushaltswarenhandlung seines Onkels Antoine Ayrer in Berlin tätig. Letzterer unterstützte seine und seines Bruders Gottfried künstlerische Ausbildung und ließ beide von Johann Jakob Haid, Bernhard Rode und Johann Heinrich Meil unterrichten. Von den Ladengeschäften befreit, konnten sie sich 1754 mit Miniaturen und Emailmalereien selbstständig machen. Seit 1758 erste Radierversuche in allerlei Techniken wie Strichätzung, Aquatinta und Crayon-Manier. Frühe Verbindungen zu Verlegern von Almanachen und Kalendern beförderten diese Entwicklung. Vielbeschäftigt hat er Berlin nur selten verlassen. Eine längere Reise zu seiner Mutter nach Danzig im Jahre 1773 schlug sich dann entsprechend intensiv in seiner Arbeit nieder. Seit 1764 Mitglied der Königlich-Preußischen Akademie der Künste, ab 1797 deren Direktor. In der Platte rechts unten spiegelschriftlich signiert: Rud. Schellenberg fec. Seltenes religiöses Werk des Baseler Malers und Radierers Johann Rudolph Schellenberg (1740 - 1806), der zu den bedeutendsten Illustratoren seiner Zeit zählte und in seiner Schweizer Heimat als bedeutendster Radierer des 18. Jahrhunderts gelten darf. Große Erfolge errang Schellenberg vor allem durch seine entomologischen Darstellungen; schon das erste von ihm illustrierte Werk dieser Gattung, Johann Heinrich Sulzers "Kennzeichen der Insekten", machte ihn international bekannt. Insgesamt fertigte Schellenberg ca. 3.800 entomologische Zeichnungen, seine Illustrationen finden sind in ca. 170 Büchern. Das bis heute bedeutendste von Schellenberg illustrierte Werk sind die von 1775 bis 1778 in vier Bänden erschienenen "Physiognomischen Fragmenten" Johann Caspar Lavaters (ND Leipzig, Edition Leipzig, 1968 - 1969). Mit seinen "biblischen Geschichten" wollte Schellenberg vor allem Kindern die biblischen Inhalte in episodischer, anschaulicher Form näherbringen, ein Werk, das er selbst als "ein sehr nützliches, aber zugleich ein sehr schweres Unternehmen" bezeichnete, in dem "gemeinnützige Absicht, Wahrheit, guter Geschmack und Richtigkeit der Zeichnung" mit einander verbunden werden müßten. Beide Bände mit jeweils 60 biblischen Geschichten, die jeweils mit einer halbseitigen Radierung Schellenbergs illustriert sind. Die beiden sehr schönen Halblederbände befinden sich in tadellosem, geradezu neuwertigem (!) Zustand; Lederrücken noch ganz frisch; auch Deckelbezüge ohne Bereibungen; Seiten frisch und nahezu fleckenfrei; die Bände wirken ungelesen. Nahezu perfektes, auch ästhetisch sehr ansprechendes Exemplar dieses bedeutenden Illustrationswerkes.
